Egypt blocks hundreds of websites, including VPN websites, so the best VPN for Egypt has to connect on networks that try to stop VPN connections. The list grew in early 2026, when Discord and Roblox stopped working there. The right server depends on whether you’re in Egypt or abroad. In Egypt, a nearby server in Cyprus or Greece usually means lower ping. Egyptians abroad, on the other hand, can use an Egypt server for an Egyptian IP address.
Out of the 30+ VPNs we’ve tested, NordVPN stood out as my pick for the best VPN for Egypt. It has obfuscated servers, which disguise VPN traffic as ordinary web traffic, in Egypt and in nearby countries such as Cyprus, Jordan, and Turkey. Proton VPN offers its Stealth protocol even on the free plan, and ExpressVPN obfuscates every server without any setup.
Egypt VPN Shortlist for 2026
- NordVPN: Best overall, with obfuscated servers in Egypt and six countries in the region
- Proton VPN: Best for privacy, with Swiss jurisdiction and Secure Core servers
- ExpressVPN: Best for automatic obfuscation on every server
- Surfshark: Best for households, with unlimited devices on one subscription
- Private Internet Access: Best budget VPN for users in Egypt, with a built-in Shadowsocks proxy

We tested in October from a Windows 11 PC in Europe on a 190.42 Mbps connection. With each VPN on its Egypt server, we checked the IP address on whatismyipaddress.com, tested speed against Speedtest servers in Cairo, and tried Netflix Egypt. We also restarted the PC with the kill switch enabled to see whether any traffic leaked.
Egypt VPN Reviews: Strengths and Drawbacks
1. NordVPN: Best Overall
Pros
- Obfuscated servers in Egypt and the region
- NordWhisper protocol
- Double VPN servers
- Post-quantum encryption
- Threat Protection Pro on the Plus plan
- Covers 10 devices
Cons
- Windows app conflicts with other VPNs
- Price increases after the first term
NordVPN has two tools for networks that block VPNs: obfuscated servers and NordWhisper, a protocol designed to look like regular web traffic. When I connected to its Egypt server, the lookup showed Egypt, and download speed was 175.92 Mbps, a 7.6% speed loss. NordVPN also unblocked Netflix Egypt, and with the kill switch in blocking mode, no traffic leaked while the PC restarted.
There’s one catch on Windows. On my PC, NordVPN sometimes wouldn’t connect while ExpressVPN was open in the background, so close other VPNs before connecting. Our NordVPN review covers that issue and the rest of its test results. The Basic plan costs under $3.50 a month on a two-year term.
2. Proton VPN: Best for Privacy
Pros
- Stealth protocol on every plan
- Servers in Egypt and Jordan
- Secure Core double-hop servers
- NetShield blocks ads and malware
- Open-source apps
- Unlimited data on the free plan
Cons
- Higher ping on its Egypt server
- No Egypt server on the free plan
Proton VPN lets you switch to its Stealth protocol on any server when a regular connection fails in Egypt. On its Egypt server, Proton VPN lost just 7.2% of its speed, and the lookup confirmed an Egyptian IP address. Ping was higher, though: 122 ms, compared with 86 ms on NordVPN. Proton VPN unblocked Netflix Egypt, and its advanced kill switch kept traffic blocked during the restart.
For privacy, Proton VPN is based in Switzerland, and its Tor over VPN servers let users explore the dark web anonymously. The VPN Plus plan is under $3 a month with a two-year subscription, and our Proton VPN review compares it with the free plan.
3. ExpressVPN: Best for Automatic Obfuscation
Pros
- Obfuscation on every server
- Simple apps for beginners
- RAM-only servers
- Independently audited no-log policy
- Router app support
Cons
- Few advanced settings
- Higher renewal price
ExpressVPN requires no setup for restricted networks, because obfuscation is always active. Through its Egypt server, ExpressVPN provided an Egyptian IP address and unblocked Netflix Egypt. Speed fell by 9.0% to 173.31 Mbps.
At its strictest kill switch setting, nothing leaked during the restart. The VPN even works on Apple TV, which helps Egyptians abroad watch Netflix Egypt on a television. On the two-year Basic plan, ExpressVPN is priced under $3 a month.
4. Surfshark: Best for Unlimited Devices
Pros
- Unlimited devices
- Camouflage mode and NoBorders
- MultiHop servers
- Antivirus on the Surfshark One plan
- Rotating IP feature
Cons
- No servers in Jordan
- Occasionally slow to connect
Surfshark covers every phone, laptop, and TV in a household on one subscription. In Egypt, its NoBorders mode activates automatically on networks that restrict VPNs. The lookup placed Surfshark’s Egypt server in Egypt, and Surfshark unblocked Netflix Egypt. The speed loss was 8.7%. With Strict mode enabled, the kill switch kept the connection blocked through the restart.
The Surfshark One plan also adds data breach alerts, a basic form of identity theft protection. Our Surfshark review covers the rest of its features. Surfshark’s Starter plan costs less than $2.50 a month over two years.
5. Private Internet Access: Best Budget VPN for Users in Egypt
Pros
- Built-in Shadowsocks proxy
- Port forwarding support
- MACE blocks ads, trackers, and malware
- No-log policy proven in court
- Highly customizable settings
Cons
- Egypt server reads as Germany
- Failed to unblock Netflix Egypt
- Kill switch leaked during the restart test
Private Internet Access keeps costs low for users in Egypt who connect to nearby servers. PIA’s Egypt server had the highest download speed in our tests, 181.35 Mbps. However, when I connected PIA to Egypt, the lookup showed Germany, and PIA couldn’t unblock Netflix Egypt.
Its kill switch also leaked during the restart, which I didn’t expect from a VPN with such a strong privacy record. Its servers in all 50 US states also make PIA a top USA VPN. PIA is under $2.50 a month on its two-year plan.
Best VPN Server for Egypt
The best VPN server for Egypt depends on where you are. In Egypt, connect to a server in a nearby country, such as Cyprus, Greece, or Turkey. You already have an Egyptian IP address, and a shorter distance usually means lower ping. The Egypt servers we tested are hosted in Europe, so connecting to one from Egypt has no speed advantage.
Abroad, connect to an Egypt server. It provides an Egyptian IP address, which you can use to change your Netflix region to Egypt and watch other Egyptian streaming services. Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Israel, and the UAE are available on NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and PIA.
Jordan is only on NordVPN and Proton VPN. If a regular server won’t connect, switch to an obfuscated one: on NordVPN, the obfuscated list includes Egypt and those six countries.
Websites and Apps Blocked in Egypt
Internet filtering in Egypt has grown in stages:
- Since 2017: authorities have blocked hundreds of websites, including independent news sites and VPN websites.
- 2018: a new cybercrime law allowed investigators to order blocks on websites seen as a threat to national security or the economy.
- January 2026: Discord stopped working on WE and Vodafone, with no official statement.
- February 2026: Roblox was blocked after the Supreme Council for Media Regulation cited child safety concerns.
Calling apps are a separate case. Messages on WhatsApp and similar apps go through normally. Voice and video calls, however, have been restricted on and off for years, so a VPN for WhatsApp is useful for calls.
VPN Laws in Egypt
VPNs are legal in Egypt, and no law prohibits using one. The government does block many VPN websites, and the cybercrime law applies to what you do online with or without a VPN. Egypt’s approach is looser than China’s, where only government-approved VPNs are legal and the VPNs that work in China rely on obfuscation.
As for Proton VPN, there’s no report of it being blocked in Egypt. After Discord stopped working, Proton said free signups from Egypt rose to more than 250% above normal levels.
How to Set Up a VPN for Egypt
If you’ve never used one, our guide on how to use a VPN covers the basics. For Egypt, the setup looks like this:
- Subscribe before you travel if you can. VPN websites can be hard to load in Egypt.
- Install the app on your phone and computer. Our rankings of the best VPNs for iPhone and the best-rated VPNs for macOS cover those devices.
- Enable the kill switch so traffic stops if the VPN disconnects.
- Connect to the right server: a server in a nearby country if you’re in Egypt, or an Egypt server if you’re abroad.
- Enable obfuscation if the VPN won’t connect. Use obfuscated servers or NordWhisper on NordVPN, Stealth on Proton VPN, Camouflage mode on Surfshark, or the Shadowsocks proxy on PIA. ExpressVPN obfuscates automatically.
On NordVPN, choose a country from the server list after signing in. Once connected, the app shows your new IP address at the top. Obfuscated servers are under Specialty servers. Select Obfuscated servers to connect to the fastest one, or choose a country from that list.
Free VPNs for Egypt
Proton VPN‘s free plan is the best free VPN to use in Egypt: it has no data limit, and Stealth works on it. However, it has no Egypt server, and neither do the free plans of Windscribe, PrivadoVPN, and Hide.me, so an Egyptian IP address requires a paid VPN.
Hola and Urban VPN may offer Egypt, but Hola’s free version uses the devices and bandwidth of its users, and Urban VPN collects browsing data for marketing. Our comparison of free and paid VPNs explains the other limits of free plans.
Verdict
For users in Egypt, NordVPN is my first choice. Its obfuscated server list covers Egypt and six countries nearby, and NordWhisper is a backup when those don’t connect. Proton VPN offers Stealth on every plan, including the free one, and its paid plan adds an Egypt server for trips abroad. Egyptians abroad can choose between four VPNs.
NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark showed Egypt on the lookup and unblocked Netflix Egypt, so pick by features: automatic obfuscation on ExpressVPN, or unlimited devices on Surfshark. Private Internet Access works for a tight budget in Egypt, but its Egypt server showed Germany, and its kill switch leaked during our restart test.
