How to Unblock Irish TV Outside Ireland
Choose Dublin in the VPN app first, then go to the player’s website or app and press play. Virgin Media Play and RTÉ Player check for an Irish IP address, and so do TG4’s Ireland-only programs. Delete the site’s cookies after you connect, so it doesn’t reuse a location saved earlier. Virgin Media Play requires a free account.
Registration collects a name, email address, password, gender, year of birth, an Irish county, and the Eircode. RTÉ Player also requires a free account with an email address. If a service blocks your VPN, try a different VPN. Changing servers made no difference in our tests, and ExpressVPN has only one Irish location.
Which Irish Services Block Viewers Abroad
Virgin Media Play blocks foreign connections completely, while RTÉ and TG4 make part of their schedules available worldwide.
- Virgin Media Play: from Europe, the player showed an error screen instead of the program, with no mention of location, so the block is easy to mistake for a technical fault.
- RTÉ Player: outside Ireland, RTÉ serves an international version with news and a selection of programs. Live RTÉ One, RTÉ2, and most of the catalog require an Irish IP address. Our RTÉ Player guide covers the domestic version in detail.
- TG4 Player: the live channel and most programs play normally from Europe with the VPN disconnected, in a desktop browser and on the Android app. TG4+1 showed a geo-restriction message on both, and TG4 marks Ireland-only programs with [é] in its schedule.
GAA+ Works Abroad Without a VPN
For Gaelic games, leave the VPN off. GAA+ is the GAA’s own streaming service, called GAAGO. Viewers outside Ireland can watch more than 180 games a year, including both All-Ireland Championships and the Allianz Leagues. In Ireland, GAA+ lists about 40 games, the ones RTÉ, TG4, and BBC Northern Ireland don’t show. Connecting through Dublin would leave fewer games to watch. Individual prices for viewers abroad:

ExpressVPN unblocked RTÉ Player and Virgin Media Play, live and on demand, on its Dublin server, where it measured 165.19 Mbps. TG4 blocked it on every program, including the ones that play abroad without a VPN. ExpressVPN users are better off disconnecting for TG4. Its obfuscation applies to every connection without a setting to change.

RTÉ and TG4 in Northern Ireland
Most of RTÉ Player works in Northern Ireland without a VPN. RTÉ says the majority of its schedule is available there, but programs with Republic-only rights are blocked. Its examples include Home and Away, the Olympics, the World Cup, the Euros, the Champions League, and UK co-productions such as Normal People.
In July 2024, RTÉ News bulletins with Olympic footage were blocked in the North as well. Connecting to Dublin covers those exceptions, and TG4’s Ireland-only programs are already available across the whole island.
