Proton VPN is the VPN we’d recommend to a Discord community that cares most about privacy. It’s run from Switzerland, outside the US and EU data-sharing arrangements, the code for every app is public, and its no-logs policy has passed an independent audit each year since 2022.

In practice, that means there’s no record of which servers you joined or when. Its Stealth protocol is the other reason it ranks this high. Stealth wraps the VPN connection so it resembles an ordinary HTTPS site visit, and on our UK server it costs only 1.9% of speed compared to plain WireGuard.

So on a filtered campus network, you get past the block without paying for it in lag. Speed overall was close to NordVPN’s, and ping trailed it by only a few milliseconds. 3. ExpressVPN: Best for Discord With Zero Setup

ExpressVPN suits anyone who wants Discord working without touching a setting. Obfuscation is built into every server, so there’s no special server list to find on a school or work network. On top of that, it was the quickest VPN to connect in our tests, at one to two seconds, and it matched NordVPN’s 7.8% speed loss.

That speed comes from Lightway, ExpressVPN’s own protocol, and the nearby ping was only a millisecond behind NordVPN’s. As a result, calls carry no delay you’d notice. ExpressVPN also helps you use Discord in Turkey, where the app has been blocked since 2024. There’s one setting to know about, though.

Surfshark costs less than the top three and still feels quick on Discord, at about $2.50 a month on a two-year plan. On our UK server, it recorded the best download speed of any VPN we tested, and its average loss across three locations was 9.6%. Its nearby ping was the highest of the five, though only by about ten milliseconds.

You won’t notice that difference in a voice call. For public Discord servers, CleanWeb is the feature that earns its spot. It blocks ads and known malware and phishing sites, so a fake Nitro link is far less likely to load. Alternative ID, included on every plan, also creates a masked email address.

Why Discord Is Blocked, and What a VPN Changes

Who blocks Discord, and how, depends on where you are:

• Schools and workplaces block it to keep people focused. They use a DNS filter, a firewall rule against Discord’s IP ranges, or traffic inspection that spots Discord by its hostname. Changing your DNS settings gets around only the first.
• Public Wi-Fi networks sometimes block it to save bandwidth.
• Countries block it for political reasons. China blocks Discord, Russia and Turkey have blocked it since 2024, and several Gulf states allow text but restrict voice calls.
• Internet providers may slow voice and video traffic instead, a practice called ISP throttling.

A VPN handles all four the same way, and it changes three things:

• The network can’t see Discord. Its traffic travels within an encrypted connection to the VPN server, so the hostname and IP address remain hidden.
