We set up a VPN blocker on our own connection to see which VPNs still connect. With UDP traffic blocked in Windows Firewall, Proton VPN reconnected in under 10 seconds, ExpressVPN in about 40, and NordVPN in about 90. NordVPN kept the most speed, at 164.11 Mbps. Websites use a second kind of VPN blocker, and three IP databases flagged every server IP address we checked as a VPN.

What Is a VPN Blocker?
A VPN blocker is any system that detects a VPN connection and stops it, either on the network or on the website. Networks such as office, school, and hotel Wi-Fi block the VPN connection itself, so the app can’t connect. Websites such as streaming services and banks allow the connection and block the VPN’s IP address instead, usually with a VPN or proxy warning.

How to Bypass a VPN Blocker on Wi-Fi
Leave the VPN’s protocol on its automatic setting first. Many network blocks target UDP ports, which WireGuard-based protocols such as NordLynx use, and an automatic setting tries a TCP connection when UDP fails.
- Obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular encrypted web traffic on a network that inspects packets. NordVPN calls its version NordWhisper, Proton VPN calls it Stealth, and ExpressVPN applies it to every connection.
- Port 443 is the port for ordinary HTTPS traffic, so networks rarely block a TCP connection there.
- Mobile data avoids the Wi-Fi network altogether, which helps when a work or school laptop blocks VPN apps.

Three VPNs Compared on a Blocked Network
In September, we blocked all outbound UDP traffic except DNS in Windows Defender Firewall on a Windows 11 PC in Europe, then connected each VPN to a UK server. Without a VPN, the connection measures 190.36 Mbps.

Each VPN connected with no manual change. Proton VPN recovered fastest, NordVPN kept 86% of the baseline download, and ExpressVPN recorded the lowest speed after its initial error.
How to Bypass VPN Detection on Websites
Connect to a different server first. Each server uses its own IP addresses, and the site may not have listed that one yet. If the VPN warning stays, try these next:
- A dedicated IP address belongs to one user, so blocks triggered by other people’s traffic on a shared server, such as CAPTCHA loops and fraud checks, don’t apply. Our dedicated IP guide compares the VPNs that sell one.
- Location spoofing in a browser extension matches the browser’s time zone and location to the server. NordVPN’s and ExpressVPN’s extensions unblocked Disney+ this way in our streaming test after their desktop apps were blocked.
- Leak protection stops DNS and WebRTC requests from exposing the location behind a new IP address.
- Split tunneling sends a banking app outside the VPN when the bank blocks VPN logins, while the rest of the device stays protected.
Streaming services maintain the strictest lists. In our streaming test, Disney+ blocked every desktop app except Surfshark’s, and ITV and Prime Video detected most VPNs. Can Websites Tell You’re Using a VPN?
Yes. In September, we checked the US server IP address of each VPN on whatismyipaddress.com, scamalytics.com, and proxycheck.io.

ProxyCheck had never logged the Proton VPN and ExpressVPN IP addresses before our check, and it flagged them as VPNs with 100% confidence. The databases appear to judge an IP address by who owns its range, so a new server IP address is flagged from the start. NordVPN’s IP address had appeared 618 times since July 2026 and still scored lowest on Scamalytics.
The databases also disagreed on ownership. Proton VPN’s IP address appeared under Proton AG, Diamond IP Brokers, and a “Private Customer” label, while NordVPN’s read PacketHub on whatismyipaddress and Scamalytics.
When a site blocks a whole VPN range, another server from the same VPN won’t help, so switch to a VPN the site hasn’t listed.

NordVPN measured 164.11 Mbps down and 18.50 Mbps up from London on our blocked network, ahead of Proton VPN’s 96.76 and ExpressVPN’s 83.94. Its Automatic setting tried NordLynx first, which the firewall blocked, then moved to NordWhisper by itself. That took about 90 seconds, far longer than Proton VPN or ExpressVPN.
Ping under load was 601 ms on upload, so video calls can lag on NordWhisper. Disney+ blocked its desktop app, but not its browser extension, which spoofs the browser’s location, and Scamalytics scored its US IP address 41. A dedicated IP address for website blocks costs $4.19 a month on top of the $3.49 Basic plan.

Proton VPN reconnected in under 10 seconds when we blocked UDP, switching to WireGuard over TCP without a prompt. Download measured 96.76 Mbps from London on that fallback, and its Stealth protocol, selected by hand, measured 109.04 Mbps on the same server. Stealth hides the VPN connection in TLS, the encryption HTTPS websites use, and works on any Proton VPN server.
Websites were harder. Scamalytics rated its US IP address 56, and Hulu, Disney+, and ITVX blocked it in our streaming test. Two years of the VPN Plus plan cost $71.76 upfront, which keeps Proton VPN among the cheap VPNs with obfuscation.

ExpressVPN obfuscates every connection. Under our UDP block, its Automatic setting first showed a can’t-connect message with a link to support, then connected on its own after about 40 seconds. The app doesn’t show which protocol it chose. Its speed dropped to 83.94 Mbps from London, less than half the 185.74 Mbps it measured on an open network, where it ranks among the fastest VPNs we’ve tested.
Scamalytics gave its US IP address the highest score, 79, compared to 41 for NordVPN and 56 for Proton VPN. Split tunneling for banking apps isn’t available on Lightway Turbo. ExpressVPN costs $2.99 a month for the first 28 months on the Basic plan, $83.72 in total.
Summary
NordVPN comes first for bypassing VPN blocks. On our blocked network, it kept 164.11 Mbps over NordWhisper, and its dedicated IP add-on and location spoofing cover website blocks. Its 90-second fallback is the drawback, so on a network known to block VPNs, select NordWhisper by hand. Proton VPN reconnected fastest and offers Stealth on every server, though Hulu and Disney+ blocked it.
ExpressVPN requires no setup but lost half its speed under a UDP block, after an error message. Obfuscation solves network blocks, while website blocks depend on whether a service has listed the VPN’s IP range. No VPN hid its IP address from the lookup databases we checked.
