The Mexican server measured 76.78 Mbps, the slowest of the three paid picks.

ExpressVPN‘s Mexican server measured 147.51 Mbps and opened ViX. MediaStreamer, ExpressVPN’s Smart DNS, puts a Mexican location on a television or a console. Apple TV and Fire TV also have their own apps, so a Mexican channel plays on the living room screen. ExpressVPN returned our money 15 minutes after we asked on live chat.

PrivadoVPN‘s free plan put us on a Mexico City server at 126.39 Mbps down and 13.72 Mbps up. ViX, TUDN, and Netflix Mexico opened on it, a result no other free plan came close to in our tests. The free plan covers 10 countries across 13 locations. Mexico appears ahead of the premium divider in the list, so free accounts can select it. No other free plan we tested offers that.

Its limits are the 10 GB monthly allowance and one connected device. Renewing that allowance means a manual step on the account page every month, which becomes tiresome. Once the data is gone, speeds fall to 1 Mbps, and the VPN connection keeps working. PrivadoVPN is based in Iceland, and free accounts include Scramble obfuscation.

5. Windscribe: Best Free Plan for Use in Mexico

Windscribe’s free plan has no Mexican server. It serves people already in Mexico who want protection on public Wi-Fi or a foreign catalog to browse. Free accounts begin with 2 GB a month, and confirming an email address increases that to 10 GB. The country list covers 10 options, including the US, the UK, and Canada.

On free servers, we measured 182.21 Mbps in the UK and 160.59 Mbps in the US, a 10% average loss. Free accounts connect any number of devices, so one sign-up covers a household. 6. Hide.me: Free Plan With No Data Limit

Hide.me gives free users seven countries: Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK and the US. Mexico is paid-only. The free plan covers browsing and public Wi-Fi in Mexico. Mexican channels abroad need a paid plan. Data is uncapped, which is rare at no cost. In our streaming round, its free plan opened none of the nine platforms, and it blocks P2P transfers too. Its free UK server measured 152.31 Mbps, and the US server 112.48 Mbps.

Using a VPN in Mexico

VPNs are legal in Mexico. Streaming services set their own rules on top of that, and ViX and Netflix both tie an account to the country where it was opened. Mexican mobile lines now have to be linked to their user’s identity. Registration requires a CURP for citizens, an RFC for companies, or a passport for foreign visitors.

The regulator replaced its June cutoff with deadlines running from August 15 to December 31, decided by the last digit of the number. A VPN changes the IP address and has no effect on a registered SIM card. On public Wi-Fi, the encryption does the work. Hiding your IP address also keeps sites and networks from tying the connection to your name.
