Windscribe vs NordVPN

NordVPN vs Windscribe is a typical internal debate of open-minded people. Since NordVPN is so popular and “cliche”, why not try Windscribe which seems equally secure, fast, and capable? Perhaps there’s a reason why millions of people use NordVPN and not its rival.

Windscribe is popular as a free provider whose speed and security aren’t impacted. Its premium version is also great, as it allows for streaming, P2P, and more servers. NordVPN doesn’t have a free plan, although you can use it for free for up to 30 days. Either way, it’s a premium-only provider that, from the start, punches heavily with its cutting-edge features. Given the price similarity, this NordVPN vs Windscribe comparison for 2026 is even more interesting. If the price is similar, are we talking about a similar quality level?

That’s exactly what we’ll address in this comparison. We have 8 tests ahead of us and the road is windy; a bit rainy perhaps. The battle commences in seconds and once we count the score, we’ll tell you which provider is better, NordVPN or Windscribe. Pay attention!

Windscribe vs NordVPN: All You Need To Know

As you’ve likely anticipated, NordVPN has beaten Windscribe in the majority of our tests, making it a better provider. The only tie we had was in the first round, as Windscribe offers unlimited simultaneous connections, as opposed to 10 in NordVPN.

Other aspects, such as security, privacy, ease of use, speed, streaming, and server count are on NordVPN’s side. Best of all, it’s more affordable, so the choice to buy it is a no-brainer.

Here’s a quick comparison that highlights their most notable differences:

Applications & Ease of Use

Windscribe and NordVPN support a variety of devices. At the base level, we’re looking at computers, tablets, laptops, and phones that use Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS operating systems. However, the list just begins, as both have advanced device support.

In particular, we’re looking at free-to-download VPN clients for Firestick. NordVPN and Windscribe also support routers, which means you can VPN-protect the entire house. tvOS VPN apps are also available and native, unlike some other VPNs that lack them.

It’s good to know that both providers have browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. While Windscribe’s extension is more focused on blocking ads, NordVPN’s equivalent can do the same BUT with the addition of location spoofing and other advanced features.

Okay, so what about ease of use?

Nordvpn App Updated
© Gizmodo.com

NordVPN offers this gorgeous, spacious, and modern-looking app for Windows, macOS, and Linux computers. It looks the same on iOS and Android. We can say it’s smooth and intuitive, allowing you to connect to a server in mere seconds and find every feature you need.

Try NordVPN for yourself

Special attention is on bonus security features, such as Meshnet or Threat Protection Pro whose location is simple and quick.

Windscribe’s desktop apps are atrocious and the iPhone VPN app looks better; Android as well. The desktop app is tiny and contains just a connection button with a few more things. Opening the server list “unwraps” the window, while Settings are a completely new window.

Windscribe’s unlimited connections beat the 10 connections from NordVPN. However, the latter excels in ease of use, making the round a tie.

Windscribe vs NordVPN Price Comparison

You’d expect NordVPN to be bloody expensive but reality sings a happier song.

Its 2-year plans with 3 free months start at only $3.09/mo, which is very affordable.

Nordvpn Pricing
© NordVPN

The Plus plan, which is more expensive, includes Threat Protection Pro with NordPass to amplify your password management game. Its Complete or Ultimate plan, as it’s often titled, gives you everything from the previous two with NordLocker and NordProtect.

NordLocker comes with 1 TB of safe cloud storage, while NordProtect shields you against the prying eyes of data brokers. It also removes your data from data brokers. 1-year plans are there as well. They usually don’t come with 3 months but are discounted by at least 50%.

Save 70%+ on NordVPN

Windscribe doesn’t have such flexible pricing.

Windscribe Price
© Windscribe

This VPN has an annual plan at $5.75/mo, a monthly plan at $9/mo, and a “custom” plan. The last one is very interesting because you can make a plan with the server locations you’ll use. You don’t have to get all the servers; instead, buy one or more locations you need.

This way, you can pay way less than for the “ready-made” plan and save a bit of money.

We love its flexibility but this isn’t the most cost-effective VPN solution. Namely, the minimum purchase is $3/mo, and each location costs $1/mo, so you pay $3/mo for 3 locations and $5.75/mo for the annual plan with 60+ locations.

Which VPN Is Cheaper?

After this Windscribe vs NordVPN price comparison, we can conclude that both are very affordable.

But which VPN is cheaper, NordVPN or Windscribe?

In our book, NordVPN is a cheaper provider and a better deal overall. At $3.09/mo or so, you can get 113 countries, while Windscribe’s custom plan, at $3/mo, gives you 3 countries. Moreover, even Windscribe’s annual plan is way more expensive than NordVPN’s one.

In this case, NordVPN costs under $5/mo, while its rival is close to $6/mo. Things are pretty clear—NordVPN is cheaper!

NordVPN vs Windscribe: Features Analysis

Windscribe’s feature list is rather longer than other subpar free providers. Of course, the same, if not longer list is in the paid version. But will this list be enough to beat NordVPN’s security craftsmanship? We have an exciting comparison; be prepared!

Shared Features

As VPNs are virtually the same under the hood, certain overlaps can happen. NordVPN and Windscribe are no exceptions and they share a few features, such as:

  • 256-bit encryption
  • Kill switch
  • Split tunneling
  • WireGuard/NordLynx protocols. These are virtually the same, with NordLynx being NordVPN’s proprietary WireGuard improvement.
  • Servers based on RAM
  • Private DNS
  • Double Hop/Double VPN. Again – the same features but with the option to pick entry and exit servers in Windscribe. There’s a catch, which is explained in our Windscribe VPN test.

In general, Windscribe and NordVPN seem to share plenty of features. For instance, their kill switches are automatic but can also be tweaked to work before you connect, preventing you from going online until the VPN is ON. Another thing is a Double VPN or Double Hop.

This feature routes your connection through two servers, adding a layer of encryption. NordVPN offers these “pre-determined” pairs of servers, while Windscribe allows you to select Server 1 and Server 2 for more customization. We’ll soon explain the “catch”.

It’s great to see that 256-bit AES encryption is on both sides, with other typical features like split tunneling, RAM servers, modern protocols, etc.

Unique Features

Whether you choose NordVPN or Windscribe, you will get a few advanced features.

We call them unique but really, they’re more “advanced” than unique because we’ve seen them in other VPNs as well.

R.O.B.E.R.T, Double Hop, and Secure Hotspot – Windscribe

Starting with Windscribe, let’s discuss its Double Hop first.

It works only on desktop platforms because it’s realized via the browser extension. You need Windscribe as an app AND as a browser extension to make the thing work. First, you’ll connect to a VPN server in the app and then change your IP in the VPN extension.

This functions rather well and it’s great that you can customize the connection. Unfortunately, this also makes Double Hop unavailable on iOS and Android, as mobile browsers don’t support VPN extensions. We then have R.O.B.E.R.T.

It’s Windscribe’s way of blocking trackers, ads, malware, and different types of sites. For example, you can block gambling sites, adult platforms, crypto services, and more. This can be great for parental control or simply filtering out the things you don’t want to see.

Windscribe Secure Hotspot

R.O.B.E.R.T is highly customizable, letting you set custom rules for particular domains. Finally, there’s Secure Hotspot, which lets you share the VPN connection wirelessly. You can make a mobile hotspot and let other people connect to it, enjoying a VPN-protected connection.

This eliminates the need to use a VPN on a router, making it very convenient.

Meshnet, Threat Protection Pro, and Dark Web Monitor – NordVPN

NordVPN has a handful of great features – one is unique!

The unique feature is Meshnet, which is used to share files remotely, create secure LAN parties, and remotely access another device. This feature is FREE and you can use it without subscribing to NordVPN. It’s a non-VPN-related option but so useful that we had to address it.

Threat Protection Pro is NordVPN’s security suite that works in tandem with the VPN.

It blocks ads, trackers, malicious sites, and malware, ensuring a clean online experience. It’s not in the Basic plan, though, but if you get Plus, it will work like a charm. NordVPN will also block malicious downloads and keep ALL your devices clean, including iOS/Android phones.

Dark Web Monitor is the final one we’ll address in this NordVPN vs Windscribe duel. It monitors your email and password and informs you if they’re compromised. We’ve seen this feature in ExpressVPN and Surfshark, for example, but many others are implementing it too.

We must declare the winner now, and based on our comparison so far, NordVPN takes the lead because it offers more advanced features and a Double VPN that works on all devices. Not to mention its Meshnet, whose capabilities are worth a gold ingot!

Do Windscribe and NordVPN Store Logs?

Let’s turn another page of this NordVPN vs Windscribe book and discuss their logging practices. Before we do, we’ll mention their jurisdictions.

  • NordVPN is based in Panama – an off-shore location.
  • WIndscribe is based in Canada – a 5 Eyes location.

NordVPN has an advantage in terms of location. Panama has way more “lukewarm” privacy laws, which means it’s not heavy on surveillance and tracking. Canada, on the other hand, is all but privacy-friendly and is known for severe monitoring and sharing collected data with other 5 Eyes countries, such as the USA, Australia, the UK, and New Zealand.

Nordvpn No Log Policy
© NordVPN (Short Version of Its No-Log Policy)

Their privacy policies are, however, some of the best we’ve seen.

After examining them, we discovered that neither stores:

  • Your IP address, originating or VPN-given
  • DNS queries/DNS requests
  • Connection timestamps
  • Session info
  • Visited websites
  • Connection metadata, etc.

Everything they collect is either anonymized and/or used for troubleshooting. Tiny stuff like used bandwidth in the last 30 days on Windscribe’s side is benign. Besides, the VPN’s free plan is capped at 10 GB/mo, so this information is used to enforce the limit.

Windscribe Log Policy
© Windscribe

In a review of NordVPN we recently published, we outlined the provider’s third-party audits from PwC and Deloitte. Windscribe went another route and received an audit on its open-source desktop apps and servers. However, its privacy policy was never audited.

This brings into the spotlight Windscribe’s no-logging claims dragged down by its rather privacy-unfriendly jurisdiction. To that, we’ll add its recent security breach in 2021 that affected the VPN’s Ukrainian servers which were unencrypted at the time.

This allowed the authorities to obtain Windscribe’s private key and decrypt all user data. After admitting the company was “wrong”, everything was patched up. Still, that’s a huge mishap, and with no privacy policy audits under its belt, Windscribe simply can’t win.

Which VPN Is Faster: NordVPN or Windscribe?

Will NordVPN extend its lead against Windscribe in this round?

We should see which provider is faster but before we do, let us mention that we tested both providers in Europe, with the native speed (without a VPN) displayed below.

Native Internet Speed
© Speedtest.net

We tested these providers for 3 days in a row, 3 times each day, and on 3 server locations. Our team opted for the UK, the USA, and Japan, to get a nice balance of relatively close and very far locations. Their protocols were set to “Automatic” to even the odds on both sides.

It’s worth noting that we used their average results for this Windscribe vs NordVPN comparison. That said, we compiled the results and took averages for each location. The first table displays the average speed loss – download and upload – so let’s see what happened:

Download Speed Loss Upload Speed Loss
NordVPN 18% 7%
Windscribe 45% 61%

The results favor NordVPN, which is a faster VPN provider than Windscribe. In both download and upload, Windscribe’s unremarkable performance wasn’t enough to overtake its competitor. If you’re interested in more details, here’s a table that displays average speed results.

UK (Download/Upload) US (Download/Upload) Japan (Download/Upload)
NordVPN 324.25/18.68 Mbps 292.75/18.31 Mbps 223.54/17.85 Mbps
Windscribe 231.67/11.39 Mbps 179.50/7.60 Mbps 147.11/3.87 Mbps

Avoid Connection Speed Losses With NordVPN

Streaming & Torrenting Comparison

Opting for a free VPN for torrenting or streaming is rarely smart.

That’s why you should avoid Windscribe’s free plan. Its paid plan, however, includes Windflix servers in the UK, the USA, Japan, and Canada. More importantly, they all work with Netflix! Apart from Netflix, Windscribe can unblock BBC iPlayer and Prime Video – commendable.

We should mention its stellar performance for HD and Full HD streaming, as well, despite its unimpressive overall speeds. However, NordVPN is a lot better, as it unblocks over 20 Netflix catalogs and works even with more “stubborn” platforms.

Do you want examples? One of them is watching Sky Sports in the USA, where NordVPN excels with its location spoofing feature in the browser extension. After testing Windscribe, we realized it wouldn’t work. Torrenting is a pleasant experience no matter which one you pick, NordVPN or Windscribe.

After using mostly nearby servers, we detected no performance drops or anything suspicious. Moreover, their security features kept us protected and prevented other users from tracking our IP address. This, along with speed, is vital for torrenting.

NordVPN offers P2P servers, which is great, but the experience is virtually the same on “normal” servers. Windscribe offers nothing similar, however, it has a useful warning if the chosen VPN location isn’t P2P-friendly.

So, NordVPN is a better option for streaming and it’s equally good for P2P, so the round goes to the Panamanian team.

Server Locations: NordVPN vs Windscribe

Windscribe’s server fleet is by no means small. Neither is NordVPN’s vast server park, which covers almost every country known to man. Here’s the table that compares them:

NordVPN Windscribe
Number of Servers 6,800+ 480+
Number of Countries 113 69
10 Gbps Ports Yes Yes
Dedicated IP Yes No

There’s no debate over which provider is better here. NordVPN offers more servers in many more countries. It even includes dedicated IPs, which are paid extra, while Windscribe has static IP addresses. 10 Gbps ports are there too and both providers have RAM servers.

In terms of server types, both use physical and virtual servers. This allows them to cover even some censored regions where they can’t physically place servers for obvious reasons. For instance, Windscribe has Russian VPN servers, while NordVPN offers many Indian IPs.

Windscribe’s server distribution is commendable given the number of countries. But compared to NordVPN’s 113, which WILL grow even more, Windscribe has to grow exponentially to even be comparable.

Bypassing Censorship: Which VPN Does It Better?

Should you use NordVPN or Windscribe to get over censorship? NordVPN is superior.

Windscribe has been used by many users to get over Chinese censorship. Apart from WireGuard, it offers two more protocols WStunnel and Stealth VPN. Both are forms of obfuscation, allowing you to bypass DPI and get over the stringent firewall.

Having tested Windscribe in China, we saw mixed results.

It would work one time, only to fail another. A few of our team members from Russia also reported some issues, albeit less critical than users in China. Windscribe surely works in China but you need a bit of tweaking and patience.

NordVPN’s performance in China is better.

Overcome Censorship With NordVPN

This provider works while connected to an obfuscated server. You also get slightly faster speeds. Furthermore, NordVPN also seems to work better in Russia, while countries like Turkey, the UAE, Iran, and Saudi Arabia don’t pose a particular threat.

Based on our experience, we’d give this round to NordVPN, which is also usable in Qatar and other internet-restricted countries.

Winner: NordVPN

Conclusion: NordVPN Dominates Windscribe

It’s no surprise that NordVPN took the win against Windscribe in this 2026 comparison.

After the 8 tests we performed, the Panamanian provider beat Windscribe in most of them, resulting in a tie in the first round, thanks to Windscribe’s unlimited concurrent connections. Despite Windscribe’s valiant efforts, NordVPN snatched the win gloriously.

It’s safer, better for privacy, more streaming-capable, and packed with more servers. On top of everything, NordVPN’s third-party audits make it vastly more trustworthy, which privacy enthusiasts will appreciate. For us, the price also plays a huge role – and here, NordVPN wins.

It’s not only better overall but also more inexpensive in the long run.

As a result, NordVPN is a logical option, simultaneously representing the #1 Windscribe alternative.
