Should you opt for Bitdefender VPN or NordVPN in 2026? Tough question, eh?
Not exactly. We all know NordVPN as the leading VPN, offering pretty much everything you need. From security and privacy to speed, unlimited bandwidth, and almighty streaming. Bitdefender VPN came much later with its Virtual Private Network. It’s not its specialty.
Instead, the company focused on device security and is famous for its antivirus. VPNs from “antivirus” companies are rarely impressive, so it’s clear that NordVPN will be better. However, the question is by how much, and should you simply get NordVPN instead?
We’ll answer both questions in today’s NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN comparison. Don’t disregard the latter just yet. As you’ll see Bitdefender VPN is also an interesting choice with plenty of good, albeit also a few bad things about it. Stay tuned – we’ll start in a second.

Applications & Ease of Use
We’ll immediately begin with the ease of use/compatibility round. Which provider offers better-looking apps, Bitdefender VPN or NordVPN? We’d say both are modern and nice-looking. The former is a pleasant surprise, though, and its apps caught us off-guard.
For one, it looks… well, dare we say as modern as NordVPN?!

Its complex design intertwined with various connection data, a world map, and important stats is immaculate. Opening the server list is done by clicking “Locations”, from where you can connect to a server in seconds. The Settings menu is also beautifully done.
You’ll easily find a VPN ad-blocker, connection options, and other features.
NordVPN’s apps are identical no matter the platform you’re using. The desktop app is the best one and sports a large world map with the server list on the left. In Settings, you’ll find its basic and advanced features, most of which have separate menus for easier location.

Both NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN feel snappy and premium on all supported systems.
Oh, speaking of them, we arrive at the first major difference. Bitdefender VPN works only on macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS. Linux, which isn’t supported, is supported by NordVPN, along with systems like tvOS, Fire OS, and various router firmware. It’s better, in other words.
NordVPN also works on gaming consoles and has Smart DNS for streaming – you won’t find it in Bitdefender VPN. Simultaneous connections are kept at 10 on both sides, leveling the playing field. Given NordVPN’s better compatibility, this “leveling” is only partial.
Needless to say, NordVPN takes the first round.
Bitdefender VPN vs NordVPN Price Comparison
Shelling out your hard-earned money on a VPN should be meticulous and well thought out. You can rest easy knowing that, at least, both VPNs are affordable.
But which one to aim for – NordVPN or Bitdefender VPN? Starting with NordVPN, it offers very flexible plans.
The 2-year Basic plan at around $3.1/mo is surely awesome having in mind 3 free months.

All three 2-year plans have 3 free months but the Plus one is the best value, as it also includes Threat Protection Pro. More about this feature in a minute. NordVPN also has 1-year plans that, in some promotions, also have some free months, which is handy.
Get the Cheapest Price on NordVPN
Its 1-year plans are a tad more expensive but still very affordable compared to, let’s say ExpressVPN. Now, let’s move on to Bitdefender VPN.
It offers a 1-year plan at $2.92/mo and a monthly plan at $6.99/mo. Not very flexible but indeed very affordable and “light” on your budget. Both providers also offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing you to test them and politely get a refund if need be.

Bitdefender VPN, however, also has a 7-day free trial. Actually, both come with a VPN free trial but in Bitdefender, you won’t have to provide credit card info. Just download the free app from the site, sign up, and enjoy the VPN. NordVPN requires credit card data.
Plus, the trial works only if you sign up using an Android device – it’s a 7-day one as well.
Which VPN Is Cheaper?
If you’re looking to save the most, Bitdefender VPN will always beat NordVPN. However, on the value front, the former will hardly match NordVPN’s ferocity. Don’t forget that NordVPN is still inexpensive – Bitdefender VPN is marginally more affordable per month.
The main advantage is that Bitdefender VPN “locks” you in for a year at around $3/mo, while NordVPN “forces” you to commit to 2 years.
NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN: Features Analysis
Don’t be fooled by Bitdefender VPN’s cheap prices because the provider packs a punch and offers plenty of features to enjoy. But are these enough to knock out the title of the best VPN from NordVPN’s muscular arms?
Find out in this Bitdefender VPN vs NordVPN duel.
Shared Features
Believe it or not, these providers are similar security-wise. Of course, they’re not carbon copies but both offer the “basics” such as:
- 256-bit AES encryption. It’s commonly referred to as “bank-grade” because of its strength and impenetrability.
- Automatic kill switch. This one cuts off your internet connection if the VPN connection breaks. NordVPN’s kill switch has advanced properties that allow you to prevent internet connection until the VPN is active, adding to your privacy tremendously.
- Split tunneling. It excludes chosen apps and/or websites from using the VPN tunnel. Both worked well, although Bitdefender VPN’s equivalent has a few rough edges and usually worked only with the apps, and not websites, despite the option to exclude websites from the VPN tunnel.
- Multi-Hop. Both VPNs can route your traffic through two servers and encrypt it twice. An extra layer of encryption is always welcome and can be realized in both apps, be it on desktop or mobile devices. Find out more about how it works in our VPN Multi-hop guide.
Unique Features
You can rarely call a VPN unique but some providers stand out from the pack.
Bitdefender and NordVPN offer a fair share of “unusual” features that you won’t find in some of their more expensive rivals.
Proprietary Protocols
Let’s start with their protocols:
- NordVPN uses primarily NordLynx, a WireGuard derivative
- Bitdefender VPN uses WireGuard, which is very similar
Both protocols excel in speed, security, and privacy and are also used by dozens more providers. WireGuard is built more for speed and quick connections, while NordLynx takes all of that and boosts it to another level, which also includes improved anonymity.
Apart from that, you’ll enjoy protocols like OpenVPN and IKEv2 but they’re far less important than their top-tier, flagship-level protocols.
Advanced Protection Features
Advanced protection goes beyond your standard VPN protection.
Bitdefender VPN includes the option to block ads and trackers, which is handy because every website has these two nasties. NordVPN’s answer to that is Threat Protection Pro, which, apart from trackers and ads, also blocks malware for that extra edge.

Threat Protection Pro is one of the best features of this kind. It works on all devices, keeping your iOS and Android phones and tablets safe as well. NordVPN includes Meshnet for free, which can be used for remote file sharing and device control, for instance.
Some people also use it for streaming on Netflix with this VPN or even bypassing its password-sharing ban.
Bitdefender VPN also has a convenient feature called App Traffic Optimizer, which optimizes apps for performance to prevent lags and slowdowns.

We must add NordVPN’s Dark Web Monitor to the equation, plus NordProtect if you opt for the Complete/Ultimate plan. The former is your email breach alert tool, while the latter removes your private information from data brokers, granting you more privacy.
In our Bitdefender VPN vs NordVPN analysis, we found that the former doesn’t use RAM-only servers. NordVPN’s technical prowess tells us many things, among which is the use of RAM-only servers with Private DNS for the highest level of security.
What can we say?! NordVPN snatches this round as well.

Do Bitdefender VPN and NordVPN Store Logs?
A Virtual Private Network’s main characteristic should be privacy – the word in the middle of its name.
But do NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN adhere to this unwritten rule? In general, we can say YES. Both providers seem to offer no-log policies, so in theory, they shouldn’t store your IP address, DNS queries, visited websites, location data, timestamps, and other fluff.
NordVPN’s no-log policy is tested and audited by PwC and Deloitte, so we have no reason not to trust it. Not to mention its Panamanian jurisdiction, which screams privacy compared to 5 Eyes locations like the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada, or New Zealand.

On Bitdefender’s side, its VPN stores minimal logs mainly used for performance optimization and server maintenance. However, Bitdefender VPN stores a bit more data, such as device location and anonymized IP addresses for, as can be seen, benign purposes.
Bitdefender VPN’s jurisdiction is also privacy-friendly. It’s based in Romania, where CyberGhost which we also tested not long ago, also resides. It’s a European country but outside the 5/9/14 Eyes span, so it’s very good for privacy thanks to its laws.

The main disadvantage of Bitdefender VPN is its lack of third-party audits. A stamp from PwC, Deloitte, Cure53, or KPMG would be great to solidify Bitdefender’s no-logging efforts. It would also do wonders for the company’s transparency levels. Sadly, this isn’t the case.
For this reason, we can conclude that NordVPN is better than Bitdefender VPN for privacy and for anyone who wants a VPN that would shield their digital footprint with its life.

Which VPN Is Faster: NordVPN or Bitdefender VPN?
We now move on to the Bitdefender VPN vs NordVPN speed test. This is going to be an interesting one. We’ll compare the two providers using their fastest protocols – NordLynx and WireGuard. Our testing procedure is simple but time-consuming.
We tested both using 3 server locations – the UK, the USA, and Japan.
In addition, all tests were performed for 3 days in a row, 3 times a day to get the most realistic results. At the time of testing, we were in Belgrade, with our non-VPN speeds displayed below.

Finally, to cap everything off, we considered the averages. This means taking, for instance, all 9 tests on the UK server (3 tests a day, times 3 days in a row) and counting the average speed and/or speed loss. Speaking of the speed losses, let’s examine the table below:
| Download Speed Loss | Upload Speed Loss | |
| NordVPN | 18% | 7% |
| Bitdefender VPN | 28% | 8% |
This table shows the average download and upload speed losses in percentages, with NordVPN taking the lead and being faster, as expected.
Another table below shows the average speed test results from our three locations.
| UK (Download/Upload) | US (Download/Upload) | Japan (Download/Upload) | |
| NordVPN | 324.25/18.68 Mbps | 292.75/18.31 Mbps | 223.54/17.85 Mbps |
| Bitdefender VPN | 274.07/18.6 Mbps | 243.23/18.27 Mbps | 222.69/17.09 Mbps |
Again, we can see NordVPN’s consistency even when using more distant servers, which, for us were the ones in the USA and Japan. NordLynx and its WireGuard base are simply too much for “vanilla” WireGuard whose performance was vastly overshadowed.

Streaming & Torrenting Comparison
Bitdefender VPN performs noticeably better than other “antivirus” VPNs for streaming.
A surprise is that it works with the most prominent Netflix libraries – the USA, the UK, Canada, and others. However, it won’t work with more “exotic” libraries like Netflix Mexico, Japan, or Singapore, for example. On average, it can unblock no more than 10 libraries.

When it comes to other streaming services, Bitdefender VPN performs well too. The VPN works with BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and many popular free channels for watching the Australian Open, such as 9Now or 10Play. NordVPN performs, as expected, extraordinarily.
For one, you’re getting faster speeds and more unblockable Netflix catalogs – 20 or so. Another point is its browser extension, which supports location spoofing and works ideally for streaming. Using this extension allows you to watch ESPN out of the USA, as well.

Torrenting is another NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN comparison we’ll make.
NordVPN has dedicated P2P servers for this cause – they’re fast, secure, and reliable. However, Bitdefender VPN has something called “Peer-to-Peer Apps”, which automatically connects to the VPN when you use a torrent client.

We found this option very useful, especially when we forgot to turn on the VPN manually. Speed-wise, Bitdefender VPN performs well if you’re using “neighbor” servers. Go a bit too far and you’ll see speeds dwindling. This doesn’t happen with NordVPN.

This round is the closest one so far but NordVPN is a better overall option for P2P and streaming.
It works with more Netflix libraries and because it’s faster, expect a vastly superior experience.
Server Locations: NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN
We value transparency, which isn’t always about privacy. Instead, you something want to know how many servers and countries the VPN has. Some VPN providers hide this information – usually free VPNs whose quality is questionable.
Since we know their server counts, we’ll immediately divulge them in a table:
| NordVPN | Bitdefender VPN | |
| Number of Servers | 7,000+ | 4,000+ |
| Number of Countries | 113 | 50+ |
| RAM Servers | Yes | No |
| 10 Gbps Ports | Yes | Yes |
One thing is certain – NordVPN’s server fleet is superior. It doesn’t only offer more servers but also more countries, which means its distribution is better. Also, NordVPN uses a fine combo of virtual and physical servers, which allows for more freedom, so to speak.
For example, the provider can provide Indian IP addresses while not housing any servers in this country because of its anti-VPN stance. This consequently makes NordVPN a great VPN for Indians. To be clear, Bitdefender VPN also has a presence in India.
However, its 50+ countries can’t compete with NordVPN’s 113+.
We love that NordVPN offers dedicated servers. Bitdefender VPN, for example, offers just Double-hop servers. NordVPN’s dedicated servers include:
- P2P
- Onion Over VPN
- Obfuscated
- Double VPN
- Dedicated IP
Bitdefender VPN doesn’t offer dedicated IPs either, so it’s another minus. There’s no point in criticizing the Romanian provider that much. NordVPN wins this round for obvious reasons.
Bypassing Censorship: Which VPN Does It Better?
In our tests, Bitdefender VPN showed “anemic” results in censorship circumvention. Our acquaintances in China have reported that Bitdefender VPN wasn’t working, even when switching to different protocols.
After testing the VPN provider in the UAE, for example, we had excellent results. However, people in Russia and Turkey may struggle to get over the firewall. The NordVPN test results were way brighter, as the provider worked in China problem-free at least 8 out of 10 times.
Overcome Censorship Anywhere With NordVPN
In 2026, that’s a great result having in mind China’s Great Firewall and its ability to shoot down VPNs like planes. Other countries posed no threats to this powerful provider. Russia, the UAE, Iran, and Qatar – neither of these will be problematic in 99% of the cases.
Just be aware that you’ll need to use obfuscated servers for the best results.
Connecting to one will likely “kill” the speed a bit because of added obfuscation that masks your VPN traffic. However, the performance drop is barely feasible, as you’ll still be able to binge shows, watch sports live, or even annihilate your enemies in online games.
NordVPN, therefore, wins the final round against Bitdefender VPN.
Conclusion: NordVPN Is Better Than Bitdefender VPN
The conclusion to our Bitdefender VPN vs NordVPN comparison for 2026 is clear.
Bitdefender VPN is more affordable and better if your sole criterion is to save as much money as you can. But in that case, it’s better to get Private Internet Access which we also reviewed with a very positive score. Neither of these, however, is better than NordVPN.
NordVPN’s prowess in every aspect blew away Bitdefender VPN, proving that even this vastly upgraded provider can’t match its scope. It’s not only faster and more capable of streaming but also safer, more privacy-friendly, and compatible with all devices under the Sun.
The price difference is honestly negligible if you need a long-term VPN.
NordVPN also isn’t very pricey compared to ExpressVPN or Astrill – these two cost way more. That said, the Panamanian provider is a sweet spot between affordability and unrelenting performance, which explains why it’s our #1 provider and why millions of users swear by it.
Now go ahead and pick NordVPN – you’ll thank us later.
