Bitdefender built its name on antivirus, and VPNs bolted onto security suites usually disappoint. This one doesn’t, which makes the comparison closer than it looks on paper. NordVPN still wins 7 of the 8 rounds below, but Bitdefender VPN has closed real ground since we last looked at it.
Short Version
- NordVPN takes: apps, features, privacy, speed, streaming, servers, censorship
- Bitdefender takes: price, at $2.92/mo against $3.49
- Closest round: speed, where the two finished level in Japan
- Watch for: Bitdefender renews near $69.99 a year

Applications and Ease of Use
Bitdefender’s app is the surprise here. The layout puts connection data, a world map, and session stats on one screen without crowding it, and the server list opens from a single Locations button. Settings are laid out clearly, with the ad blocker and connection options where you’d look for them.

NordVPN matches it and adds consistency: the UI is identical across every platform; nothing needs relearning when you move from desktop to phone.

Platform coverage decides this one. Bitdefender VPN supports Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS only. NordVPN adds Linux, tvOS, Fire OS, router firmware, gaming consoles, and Smart DNS for devices that can’t take a VPN app. Both allow 10 connections, but on Bitdefender, those 10 have fewer places to go.
🏆 Winner: NordVPN
Bitdefender VPN is Cheaper than NordVPN
NordVPN offers three 2-year tiers, with 3 free months: Basic at $3.49 per month, Complete at $4.49 per month, and Prime at $7.49 per month. Complete carries the deepest cut and adds a password manager, 1 TB of storage, and Threat Protection Pro for a dollar a month over Basic.
Bitdefender is simpler and cheaper: $2.92 a month billed annually, or $6.99 monthly. It also runs a free tier limited to 200 MB a day, which is enough to check the app works and little else. Both refund within 30 days, and both offer trials. Bitdefender’s 7-day trial takes no card details.
NordVPN’s 7-day trial is Android-only and does require payment information, which our VPN free trial guide covers in more detail.
| NordVPN Best Price | Bitdefender VPN Best Price | NordVPN Lowest Renewal Price | Bitdefender VPN Lowest Renewal Price |
| $94.23 for the first 27 months | $34.99 for the first year | $139.08 annually | $69.99 annually |
Which VPN Is Cheaper?
Bitdefender, on the intro price, by 57 cents a month. Two things complicate that. Its cheap rate covers one year rather than two, and it renews at $69.99 annually, well above the $35 you paid. NordVPN’s Basic renews at $139.08, so both climb steeply, but Bitdefender reaches its renewal a full year sooner.

NordVPN is More Secure Than Bitdefender VPN
Here’s which features I found in NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN. I tested them all and found no leaks on either side, so both are equally secure in that aspect. However, NordVPN takes the lead on a few fronts.
Shared Features: Just a Few Similarities
- AES-256 encryption. Identical on both, and it protects the tunnel rather than your identity.
- Kill switch. NordVPN can block all traffic until the VPN connects, not just when it drops.
- Split tunneling. Bitdefender’s excludes apps reliably but was inconsistent with website exclusions in our testing, despite offering the option.
- Multi-hop. Both route through two servers. Our Double VPN guide explains the trade-off in speed.
Protocols: Crucial Differences
NordVPN runs NordLynx, a WireGuard build that adds a double-NAT layer, so no user IP is stored on the server. Bitdefender offers standard WireGuard plus Catapult Hydra, inherited from the Hotspot Shield infrastructure it licenses. Hydra performs well on nearby servers and is the reason Bitdefender’s regional speeds are better than most antivirus VPNs, as we’ll see later.
Where They Truly Diverge
Bitdefender blocks ads and trackers. NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro does that and adds malware scanning across desktop and mobile. Bitdefender counters with App Traffic Optimizer, which prioritizes bandwidth for chosen apps to reduce stutter.

NordVPN adds Meshnet for private device-to-device links, Dark Web Monitor for breach alerts, and Coveron identity theft protection on the Prime plan, which handles monitoring and insurance rather than data broker removal. It also uses RAM-only servers with private DNS, which Bitdefender does not.

We must add NordVPN’s Dark Web Monitor to the equation, plus NordProtect if you opt for the Complete/Ultimate plan. The former is your email breach alert tool, while the latter removes your private information from data brokers, granting you more privacy.
🏆 Winner: NordVPN
NordVPN and Bitdefender VPN Don’t Store Logs
Neither keeps activity logs, and both sit in favourable jurisdictions. Panama has no data retention requirement, and Romania sits outside the Eyes alliances, the same reason we rate CyberGhost well on privacy. NordVPN has been audited five times, by PwC and most recently Deloitte, which is the deepest verification record in the category. Bitdefender is now audited.

This changes this round from what we reported. Its support documentation confirms an independent audit of the VPN infrastructure in 2025, verifying the no-logs claim. Two caveats keep NordVPN ahead rather than level. The audit was not carried out by a Big Four firm, and Bitdefender VPN runs on licensed Hotspot Shield infrastructure that operates under its own separate privacy policy, so the audit covers Bitdefender’s systems rather than the whole chain.

Bitdefender also retains device location and anonymised IP data for maintenance, which NordVPN does not, and it’s a meaningful difference.
🏆 Winner: NordVPN
NordVPN is Faster than Bitdefender VPN
We compared NordLynx in NordVPN against WireGuard in Bitdefender VPN in Southeastern Europe, testing UK, US, and Japan servers 3 times a day for 3 days and averaging all 9 runs per location.

Here’s what we found:
| Download Speed Loss | Upload Speed Loss | |
| NordVPN | 18% | 7% |
| Bitdefender VPN | 28% | 8% |
NordVPN downloaded 18% quicker to the UK and 20% quicker to the US. Japan was a tie, at 223.54 against 222.69 Mbps, a gap of under half a percent. Uploads were level everywhere. So NordVPN wins on the averages, but the idea that it pulls further ahead over distance isn’t what our own numbers show. Our Bitdefender VPN review has the longer stability testing.
| UK (Download/Upload) | US (Download/Upload) | Japan (Download/Upload) | |
| NordVPN | 324.25/18.68 Mbps | 292.75/18.31 Mbps | 223.54/17.85 Mbps |
| Bitdefender VPN | 274.07/18.6 Mbps | 243.23/18.27 Mbps | 222.69/17.09 Mbps |
🏆 Winner: NordVPN
Streaming and Torrenting Comparison for 2026
Bitdefender handles the major Netflix libraries, the US, UK, and Canada among them, but stalls on smaller ones like Mexico, Japan, and Singapore. It unblocks around 10 in total. It also works with BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and free channels like 9Now and 10Play for Australian Open coverage.

NordVPN reaches 25 libraries and adds a browser extension with location spoofing, which is how you watch ESPN Select outside the US. Meshnet also helps with Netflix and password-sharing restrictions.

On torrenting, NordVPN has discontinued its P2P servers, so now, the entire network can be used for torrenting, and it shows; all servers I tested worked well and without any large speed drops.

Bitdefender’s Peer-to-Peer Apps feature connects the VPN automatically when a torrent app opens, which caught us out less often than remembering to do it manually. Bitdefender VPN holds up on nearby servers and drops off at distance. NordVPN doesn’t, and it’s why I prefer it for torrenting.

🏆 Winner: NordVPN
Server Locations: NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN
Bitdefender roughly doubled its country coverage over the past year, so the gap here is far smaller than it used to be. NordVPN still holds more than twice the servers, which matters most at peak hours when thin coverage shows as congestion.
| NordVPN | Bitdefender VPN | |
| Number of Servers | 9,500+ | 3,000+ |
| Number of Countries | 149 | 100 |
| RAM Servers | Yes | No |
| 10 Gbps Ports | Yes | Yes |
It also mixes physical and virtual servers, which is how it offers Indian IP addresses without housing hardware in a country hostile to VPNs, making it a strong choice for India. Its specialty fleet covers Onion Over VPN, obfuscated, Double VPN, and dedicated IP. Bitdefender VPN offers Double Hop servers only.
🏆 Winner: NordVPN
NordVPN Works in China, Bitdefender Doesn’t
Bitdefender has no obfuscated servers, and it shows. Contacts in China reported it failing regardless of protocol. It performed well in the UAE, where filtering is lighter, but Russia and Turkey are unreliable. NordVPN connected in China on 8 of 10 attempts, and Russia, Iran, and Qatar posed no problems.
You need to select obfuscated servers manually for this, and they cost you some speed, though not enough to disrupt streaming or gaming.
🏆 Winner: NordVPN
Summary: NordVPN Beats Bitdefender VPN
NordVPN takes apps, features, privacy, speed, streaming, network size, and censorship. Bitdefender VPN takes price, and by less than it appears once renewal arrives a year earlier. Bitdefender VPN is no longer the weak antivirus-bundle VPN it was. It’s audited, it covers 100 countries, and it matched NordVPN on our Japan route.
If you already pay for Bitdefender Total Security, adding the VPN is sensible. As a standalone purchase, it gives up obfuscation, RAM-only servers, dedicated IPs, and Linux support to save 57 cents a month. If price is the only criterion, Private Internet Access undercuts both. Otherwise NordVPN is the stronger all-round VPN, and 30 days is enough to confirm it.
