Czech law adds one more reason to think about privacy: phone and internet operators must keep records of every connection.

The Best VPNs for the Czech Republic

In October, we ran speed tests on UK, US, and Japanese servers and tried 14 streaming services with each VPN.

1. NordVPN: Best All-Round VPN for the Czech Republic

NordVPN unblocked every streaming service we tried, from BBC iPlayer and Netflix US to Peacock and Hulu. The average speed loss was a small 7.8%. Its Prague servers keep a Czech IP address when you bank or use government sites, and Double VPN sends traffic through two servers when you want extra privacy.

Its Meshnet feature also gives remote access to devices back home. NordVPN’s Basic plan costs $3.49 a month on a 27-month term, billed as $94.23, and renews at $139.08 a year. That long first term delays the increase by over two years.

2. Proton VPN: Best for Privacy Under Czech Data Retention

Proton VPN has the strongest privacy setup on our list. The company is Swiss, its no-logs policy passes an independent audit every year, and Secure Core sends traffic through a server in a privacy-friendly country first. Under Czech data retention, your operator’s records show only a Proton VPN server, and Proton’s audited policy means it keeps no record of your browsing either. Its average speed loss was 10.2%.

It couldn’t unblock Hulu or Pluto TV. Choose NordVPN or ExpressVPN if those services are on your list. The free plan doesn’t cap data, yet it leaves out Czech servers. Upgrading to VPN Plus adds 85 servers in Prague. Proton VPN Plus costs $2.99 a month when paid as $71.76 for two years, and the renewal rate is $83.88 a year.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Home TV Setups

ExpressVPN brings TV from home to a big screen. Its Smart DNS tool, MediaStreamer, sets a US or UK location on smart TVs that can’t install a VPN. Its router app protects every device in a shared apartment. It unblocked BBC iPlayer, Netflix US, and every other service in our main streaming tests, with a 7.8% average speed loss. Ukrainian TV was the exception: Suspilne, Teleportal, and Megogo blocked it.

For Ukrainian channels, use NordVPN or Surfshark instead. ExpressVPN’s ad blocking is also lighter on the Basic plan. Keep a browser ad blocker on alongside it. ExpressVPN’s Basic plan works out to $2.99 a month ($83.72 for 28 months) and later renews at $99.95 a year.

4. Surfshark: Best for Ukrainian TV

Surfshark surprised me on Ukrainian TV. It matched NordVPN on its Kyiv servers, unblocking Suspilne, Inter, Teleportal, Megogo, and Netflix Ukraine, while Suspilne detected Proton VPN and ExpressVPN. That’s useful for the roughly 594,000 Ukrainians living in the Czech Republic. One subscription also covers every device in a household.

On average, it lost 9.6% of our speed. Some connection attempts were slow in our tests. If one hangs, cancel it and try again. Surfshark Starter is $2.49 a month over 27 months ($67.23 up front). The $79 yearly renewal is still low for a VPN with no device limit.

5. Private Internet Access: Best for Torrenting on a Budget

Private Internet Access is the lowest-cost VPN on our list, and its Czech servers support port forwarding. That setting helps torrent clients connect to more peers, and our list of the best VPNs for torrenting explains why. MACE, its ad blocker, stopped almost every ad and tracker in our test. It lost 12.7% of our speed on average, the most of the five.

Its Windows app feels cluttered and defaults to a slower protocol. Switching to WireGuard in the settings speeds it up. It couldn’t unblock Hulu, Prime Video, or HBO Max in our tests. Czech subscriptions to Prime Video and HBO Max work without a VPN, and NordVPN or Surfshark handles Hulu.

PIA’s two-year plan costs around $2 a month before any PIA deals, and its yearly renewal is the lowest on our list. It’s also one of our best cheap VPNs.

Is a VPN Legal in the Czech Republic?

Yes, using a VPN is legal in the Czech Republic. No Czech law restricts VPNs, and Freedom House rates the country Free, with a score of 95 out of 100. Internet providers must block sites on a government list, mainly unlicensed gambling sites and media under EU sanctions. Using a VPN doesn’t make those sites legal to use.

What Czech Operators Keep for Six Months

Czech law requires phone and internet operators to keep data about your connections for six months. Under the Electronic Communications Act, that covers traffic and location data, such as when and where a device connected. What people say or read isn’t stored, only the details of each connection. The police, the BIS intelligence service, and some other authorities can request the records.

In December 2025, the Czech Supreme Court ruled that this system breaches EU law. The law itself hadn’t changed by August 2026. A VPN changes what your internet operator sees. With one connected, the operator’s records show a connection to the VPN server instead of the sites and services you use.

It doesn’t hide calls, texts, or your phone’s location from your mobile operator.

Public Wi-Fi in Prague

Prague Airport offers free Wi-Fi, as do many cafés and hotels. Some of these hotspots skip the password, and every guest shares the same network. The Czech data protection office, ÚOOÚ, advises using mobile data or a reputable VPN on public Wi-Fi. Prague’s metro and trams dropped their Wi-Fi in 2020, and riders use mobile data there instead.

Set the VPN on your Android phone or Windows 11 laptop to connect automatically on public networks. It’s then active before you sign in to your bank or email.

Czech Streaming Services and EU Travel

Czech streaming services work without a VPN in the country. Netflix’s Czech catalog has many titles with Czech subtitles or dubbing. Other services available locally include Oneplay (the 2025 merger of Voyo and O2 TV), Prima+, HBO Max, SkyShowtime, and ČT’s iVysílání. Premier League matches stream on Oneplay, and the Champions League is on Nova Sport.

During short stays in other EU countries, paid subscriptions such as Netflix and Oneplay keep working under EU portability rules. TV From Home for Expats and Students

A server in your home country brings back the services you used there:

• British TV: BBC iPlayer on a UK server, with a TV license required.
• US streaming: Hulu and the American Netflix library on a US server.
• Ukrainian TV: Suspilne, Megogo, and other Ukrainian TV services on a Kyiv server.
• Sport: live events from other countries on a VPN for streaming sports, including free Giro d’Italia streams.

Final Thoughts
