Proton VPN operates 83 servers in Auckland, the largest New Zealand network of the five, and they unblocked the same local channels as NordVPN. Being Swiss, Proton VPN answers to Swiss law, so New Zealand’s Five Eyes membership has no say over its records, and independent auditors review its no-logs policy annually.

ExpressVPN takes the least effort of the five. Lightway, its own protocol, connected within a couple of seconds every time, and its average speed loss tied with NordVPN’s at 7.8%. It also unblocked every service in our 14-service streaming test, including the British ones, so UK expats in New Zealand keep ITVX and BBC iPlayer.

Its Auckland server was another story. From overseas, it was the slowest of the three we tested there, and a live TVNZ+ stream took noticeably longer to start. It still unblocked every New Zealand channel, so give streams a few extra seconds, or lower the quality to HD if one buffers.
