The iPlayer App and TVs in New Zealand
Set the phone’s store region to the UK, then install BBC iPlayer. Apple and Google require a payment method from the new country, and Google Play allows one country change every 90 days. Connect the VPN to a UK server before opening the app. Without a UK payment method, use a laptop instead: iPlayer played in the browser on our test PC as soon as the VPN connected.
Smart TVs require a little more setup. NordVPN’s Smart DNS and ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer make a Samsung or LG set appear to be in the UK without a VPN app. Proton VPN has no Smart DNS, so on those sets it requires a router setup. The VPN apps install directly on Apple TV, Fire TV, and Android TV.
Live BBC on New Zealand Time
The time difference ranges from 11 to 13 hours, depending on daylight saving in each country. A program that airs at 8 p.m. in London goes out between 7 and 9 a.m. the next day in Auckland, and Saturday afternoon sport in Britain airs overnight. In practice, on-demand viewing fits New Zealand hours better. Most BBC programs appear on iPlayer shortly after broadcast, so an evening drama in Britain is ready to watch at breakfast in Wellington.
Distance also slows streams down. We tested from Europe, a short trip to London. In the opposite direction, while testing TVNZ abroad on Auckland servers, ping on NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN came in between 282 and 308 ms. Live TVNZ+ streams took over 10 seconds to start, so expect a similar wait between Auckland and London.
