Dutch TV Live Streams Abroad: NPO Start and KIJK in 2026

From Europe, NPO Start and KIJK blocked us with geo-restriction messages. Amsterdam servers from NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN unblocked NPO 1 and SBS6 live, their catch-up libraries, and Netflix Netherlands, and streams began in under three seconds.

Unblocking NPO Start and KIJK on a Dutch Server

Set the VPN to an Amsterdam server, open npo.nl or kijk.nl, and start NPO 1 live or any catch-up episode. A Dutch IP address is the only requirement, and neither site requires a sign-in. Without it, NPO Start and KIJK show a geo-blocking message that cites broadcast rights.

BVN worked in Europe with no VPN, but it closes on 31 December 2026. NPO says programs without rights restrictions will stay viewable abroad on NPO Start. Netflix Netherlands requires no Dutch account, and your existing login shows the Dutch catalog once the Amsterdam server connects.

1. NordVPN: Best for NPO 1 Outside the Netherlands

NordVPN unblocked NPO 1 live, SBS6 live, their catch-up episodes, and Netflix Netherlands. Its Amsterdam server delivered 181.09 Mbps, 4.9% short of our baseline. Its site lists 225+ Dutch servers, and the app places them in Amsterdam only. NordVPN’s Android trial lasts three days and requires a card. The subscription also includes a Linux app.

On Windows, an idle ExpressVPN install sometimes blocked NordVPN’s connection, and only a diagnostics check plus a fresh login fixed it. A 27-month NordVPN subscription is under $3.50 a month, and one month costs about $15.

2. Proton VPN: Best Upgrade From a Free VPN

Proton VPN lists 672 servers in Amsterdam, and the paid server we used unblocked NPO Start, KIJK, and Netflix Netherlands. Its download speed of 159.96 Mbps was 16.0% below our baseline, the largest drop on a Dutch server. That paid access is the difference from Proton VPN Free, which failed on the same Dutch services. Proton VPN’s two-year price stays below $3 a month, or about $10 if paid monthly.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Rotterdam and The Hague Servers

ExpressVPN measured 182.80 Mbps in Amsterdam, 4.0% below our baseline and the fastest Dutch result we recorded. It unblocked NPO Start, KIJK, and Netflix Netherlands, and it lists Rotterdam, The Hague, and Amsterdam. It also ranks in our best VPNs for the Netherlands. For TV viewing, ExpressVPN has a Fire TV Stick app. The app offers little customization, and there’s still no MultiHop. 28 months of ExpressVPN averages under $3 a month. Dutch Streaming Services and What They Require

• NPO Start: NPO 1, NPO 2, and NPO 3 live, plus free catch-up.
• KIJK: Talpa’s free service for SBS6, Net5, and Veronica, live and on demand.
• Videoland: RTL’s service. The free TV Gemist tier covers seven days of RTL catch-up with no live TV and requires no card. Paid tiers add live TV at about €7, €12, and €15 a month and require a credit card. We didn’t play Videoland.
• NLZIET: a paid app with NPO, RTL, and Talpa channels in one place.
• Netflix Netherlands: Dutch originals and subtitles on the regular Netflix catalog.

Traveling in the EU Versus Living Abroad

NPO Start and NLZIET work temporarily for Dutch viewers traveling in the EU, but outside the EU most NPO videos are blocked because of broadcast rights. Dutch expats living permanently in Spain, Belgium, or another EU country fall outside that allowance. For them, and for Dutch viewers outside the EU, a VPN with an Amsterdam server replaces it.

When a Dutch Stream Won’t Load

• Geo-restriction message on NPO Start or KIJK: the site sees a non-Dutch IP address. Reconnect to the Netherlands, delete npo.nl or kijk.nl cookies, and reload.
• Netflix shows your home library: log out, reconnect to Amsterdam, and log back in.
• Proton VPN Free still shows the geo-restriction message: its free servers don’t support streaming. Upgrade to VPN Plus, or use Windscribe or PrivadoVPN free.

Windscribe and PrivadoVPN Free for Dutch TV

Free accounts from Windscribe and PrivadoVPN offered Dutch servers, and they unblocked NPO Start, KIJK, and Netflix Netherlands like the paid VPNs. Proton VPN surprised us: its free account assigned an Amsterdam server with a Dutch IP address, and every Dutch service still showed the geo-restriction message.

Verdict

Dutch TV was easy to unblock: NPO and KIJK live streams started within three seconds on every paid VPN. NordVPN ranks first, with 225+ Amsterdam servers and a download speed within 2 Mbps of the fastest result. Proton VPN Free stayed blocked on every Dutch service, so its free users should move to VPN Plus.

ExpressVPN adds servers in Rotterdam and The Hague. Windscribe and PrivadoVPN free cover occasional viewing without a subscription. With BVN closing at the end of 2026, NPO Start on a Dutch server becomes the main way to follow Dutch public TV from abroad.
