Since June 2024, Pornhub has shown Indiana visitors a notice from its owner, Aylo, in place of its homepage. Even members with existing accounts can’t sign in, and the state’s Attorney General is now suing Aylo over how the block works.

Some people who get the notice don’t live in Indiana, though. In the Chicago suburbs or just over the Ohio line, it can appear because of how sites guess a visitor’s location. Either way, the fix takes a few minutes, starting with the setup.

Why Does Pornhub Think I’m in Indiana?

Pornhub works out where each visitor is from their IP address, and the result is approximate. The databases sites use to place an IP address in a state are often wrong, and Aylo, Pornhub’s owner, has told courts that its state-level blocking isn’t always accurate.

So the Indiana block sometimes affects people who live in other states, usually for one of these reasons:

• Living near the state line: Chicago’s metro area includes Hammond and Gary in Lake County, Indiana. The Cincinnati, Louisville, and South Bend metro areas also cross state lines. An internet provider serving both sides may list all its customers under one city.
• Mobile data: Carriers often send phone traffic through a hub in another city, so sites may see that city’s location instead of yours.

In October, I used an Indianapolis server to see what Indiana visitors get. Pornhub shows the state its strictest block, with no login page:

• Blocked: Pornhub and RedTube
• Available with a paid membership: Brazzers
• Verification required for videos: xHamster and Stripchat
• Sign-up with email confirmation: Eporner

That’s stricter than in Virginia, North Carolina, and Nebraska, where Pornhub still lets existing members sign in. Pornhub treats Indiana the same way as Texas, showing a notice in place of the site.

xHamster loads normally but blurs each video until the viewer completes an age check, and Stripchat does the same with its live previews.

Indiana’s Porn Law and the Lawsuit Against Aylo

Indiana regulates porn sites, and adults remain free to watch legal content. Under SEA 17, passed in 2024, a site must check ages if at least one in three of its images and videos is harmful to minors. Its path to enforcement ran through the courts:

• March 13, 2024: Governor Eric Holcomb signs SEA 17.
• June 27, 2024: Pornhub and its sister sites start blocking Indiana.
• June 28, 2024: A federal judge blocks the law days before its July 1 start date.
• August 16, 2024: An appeals court lets the law take effect while the Supreme Court weighs a similar Texas law.
• June 27, 2025: The Supreme Court upholds the Texas law, and the challenge to Indiana’s law later ends in the state’s favor.
• December 3, 2025: Attorney General Todd Rokita sues Aylo in state court.

Covered sites can verify ages with a mobile driver’s license, a third-party database check, or transaction records. They and their verification partners can’t keep identifying information afterward, and Indiana treats verification data as personal information under its breach notification law.

The Attorney General can seek civil penalties of up to $250,000. A parent whose child got through, or an adult whose ID data was retained, can claim up to $5,000 or actual damages in court. The lawsuit against Aylo argues that blocking Indiana IP addresses isn’t enough to comply, partly because state investigators accessed the sites through a VPN.

The case targets the company, not its visitors, and it’s pending as of October 2026. Indiana’s law itself doesn’t mention VPNs or penalize people who visit adult sites. Some offenses apply regardless of age, though.

Sexual images of minors, intimate images shared without consent (including AI-altered ones), and the distribution of obscene material are crimes in Indiana.
