There’s no shortage of innovative providers, such as NordVPN or Hotspot Shield. However, innovation doesn’t always carry around the extraordinary attribute. When it does, it’s in the form of NordVPN, a well-known provider with thousands of worldwide servers, immaculate privacy, unbreakable encryption, and easy-to-use clients for all devices.
Hotspot Shield’s innovation lies in its proprietary Hydra Protocol, modern-looking apps, respectable performance, and a famous free version. Despite its advantages, Hotspot Shield hasn’t yet reached extraordinary status but this begs an interesting question.
Is Hotspot Shield unjustifiably underrated? Can it compete with NordVPN? That’s exactly what we’ll unravel today. This NordVPN vs Hotspot Shield 2026 comparison contains 8 tests that both providers will have to ride out. We’ll declare the winner in each test and calculate the score in the end to finally declare the overall title holder.

Applications & Ease of Use
Both VPNs have brought their A-game to the table with modern clients for all devices under the Sun. Do you need a VPN for Smart TV? Got it! And if you’re looking to equip your iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, or Linux devices, don’t think these VPNs will disappoint.
This NordVPN vs Hotspot Shield duel starts with a few similarities. They both support routers, gaming consoles (via routers), and Fire TV and offer 10 simultaneous connections. Neither is revolutionary but we think 10 are plenty – you don’t have that many devices!
Now, let’s discuss their ease of use – a strong suit for both.
Hotspot Shield is up first and this VPN looks marvelous, no matter the device. We’ve been using it mostly on Windows and its apps shine like a freshly painted car. The big connection button is there for convenience and the app’s home screen offers vital VPN-related data once you connect.

You can see your data consumption, peak speed, server information, and more. Hotspot Shield also lets you easily connect to a server by tapping once on it. Everything flows at lightning speed! You can find even more screenshots of its app in our full review of Hotspot Shield.
NordVPN continues the trend with perhaps even better-looking apps. There’s the sympathetic world map, which can also be used instead of the server list.

We prefer the server list, where there’s a search bar to find the desired VPN location promptly. Modifying your IP with NordVPN is a piece of cake thanks to one-click connections. Moreover, most of NordVPN’s notable features are on the home screen.
You’ll have to dig into Settings only to change the protocol and enable the kill switch.
We’re not philosophers, so let’s keep things simple. Given their notable similarities that include great-looking apps, 10 simultaneous connections, and proper compatibility, the first round is a draw.
Hotspot Shield vs NordVPN Price Comparison
We’ll first compare their subscription plans and then analyze their value for the money. Let’s start with NordVPN. This provider has been increasingly more affordable despite its growing popularity and constant improvements. The price usually hovers around $3/mo.

This is the Basic plan, which includes only the VPN and associated features. If you pick any higher-tier plan, you can get NordPass, NordPass + NordLocker, and these two plus NordProtect, which will keep you safe from data brokers and let you avoid snoopers.
Apart from 2-year plans with 3 free months, NordVPN has 1-year plans with 3 free months.
Both are incredibly good and it’s just a matter of preference. Do you want NordVPN for 27 or 15 months?
Looking at Hotspot Shield’s pricing, it’s way less flexible.

Also, this VPN is far from cheap at $6.66/mo for the annual subscription. You can also pay monthly, which would be $9.99/mo and that’s all. If that doesn’t click with you, then you’re left with the free plan, which removes streaming support and limits you to 1 location.
While NordVPN has 30, Hotspot Shield has a 45-day refund policy, which is way better. CyberGhost which we examined has the same money-back guarantee. We mentioned it because of this “shared” feature. Oh, and because it’s also a lot better.
Which VPN Is More Affordable?
Judging from the image in front of us, we can safely conclude that NordVPN is more affordable. From its 2-year to its 1-year plans, this VPN costs less than Hotspot Shield. It only lacks the free plan and a longer refund policy, which is not necessary in our opinion.
To clarify again, even 1-year plans from NordVPN are far cheaper and better. Heck, you can even get NordVPN’s Complete annual plan with NordPass + NordLocker and enjoy a password manager and cloud storage with zero-knowledge encryption with 1 TB of space.
Not to mention Threat Protection Pro, which impressively blocks trackers, malware, and ads, keeping everything nice and tidy. The price of that package would be marginally lower than Hotspot Shield, which doesn’t offer such crafty freebies.
NordVPN vs Hotspot Shield: Features Analysis
Both providers offer a fair number of features but which one has more?
To accurately answer this question, we’ll compare their shared and unique features. Both are important in determining the winner in this Hotspot Shield vs NordVPN comparison.
Shared Features
Do you know how VPNs work and what they are? They’re services that encrypt your traffic and protect your online privacy while also changing your IP and making you look like you’re somewhere else. That’s why most of them share basic fundamentals such as:
- 256-bit encryption standard
- Automatic kill switch
- Split tunneling
- IPv4/IPv6 and DNS leak protection
- RAM-based servers, etc.
NordVPN and Hotspot Shield happen to share all of these. They also offer obfuscation, which is crucial for overcoming censorship. Interestingly, both support Tor over VPN connections, which is beneficial for using a VPN for the dark web for added safety.
One thing to mention is a kill switch, which is fairly similar in the two providers.
On the basic level, it blocks internet access when the VPN connection is lost. However, NordVPN’s kill switch includes an “advanced” function, which prevents internet access unless the VPN is ON. This is especially handy for censored regions that beg for more security.
Unique Features
Okay, so let’s discuss their unique features and by extensions, their differences.
VPN Protocol Comparison
As clarified at the start of the analysis, Hotspot Shield is famous for the Hydra VPN protocol. It’s an OpenVPN TLS variant, which theoretically speeds up your connection and provides obfuscation to allow you to unblock sites and get over censorship much easier.
NordVPN offers WireGuard, which it titles NordLynx. Are these the same? For the most part.

NordLynx is an improved WireGuard iteration with a double NAT (Network Address Translation) system. In short, it can establish a secure VPN connection without storing the IP address on the disk. WireGuard, by default, stores your original IP – that’s its main downside.
Apart from NordLynx and Hydra, both providers offer OpenVPN, and Hotspot Shield also has WireGuard.

OpenVPN is a bit dated at this point but still a reliable protocol and a nice balance of speed and security. We compared OpenVPN to WireGuard in a separate guide, so glance at it if you’re hungry for more information.
Advanced Protection
VPN protection is one thing. Advanced protection is usually unrelated to a VPN. For example, Hotspot Shield has Anti-phishing protection, which informs you if you’re on a suspicious site known to be swarmed with malware and trackers. There’s also a DNS filter.

DNS filter allows you to block malicious sites and inappropriate content. We used it as parental control to often block pornography and gambling sites. During our Hotspot Shield vs NordVPN duel, the former was more than efficient at blocking online nasties.
More so is NordVPN whose Threat Protection Pro works like a well-oiled V8 engine.

Threat Protection Pro blocks malware, trackers, and ads, allowing you to explore the internet and dodge bullets like Neo. We found this feature extremely useful for real-time protection, which reacts as soon as you download a malicious file, and is instantly quarantined.
Beware that Threat Protection Pro isn’t in NordVPN’s Basic plan.
The Plus plan or above is what you’ll need to aim for, remember what we said a minute ago.
Other Notable Features
Hotspot Shield isn’t brimming with features, so it doesn’t offer anything of sky-high value. There’s the traffic proxy along with gaming-optimized and streaming-optimized servers but the latter two are by no means security features. Neither is proxy – proxies aren’t secure.
NordVPN has more fuel in the tank, so we get:
- Double VPN servers, which double your encryption. This is done by routing your traffic through two servers in different countries, ensuring you’re fully untraceable.
- Dark Web Monitor. Another handy option that tells you if your password and email are endangered and on which sites, letting you react timely and, for example, change the password.
- Meshnet. NordVPN’s free feature, which aids remote device access/control and IP routing. You and use it to overcome geo-blocks and even watch streaming sites through another person’s IP address.

We haven’t mentioned NordVPN’s amazing browser extensions that you can download for free and use with a subscription. They offer a myriad of other features to back you up, such as location spoofing and WebRTC leak protection.
With everything said, NordVPN is a more compelling provider with more security features for less money.

Do Hotspot Shield and NordVPN Store Logs?
Hotspot Shield or NordVPN, which provider is more privacy-friendly?
To answer this question, let’s first divulge their jurisdictions. Hotspot Shield is a US VPN, which puts it in the 5 Eyes region. NordVPN is from Panama, technically an American territory but an independent country with off-shore i.e. privacy-friendly laws.
Hotspot Shield belongs to the famous Pango Group, often called simply Pango. NordVPN is a product of Nord Security whose reputation is impressive in the world of cyber security. Let’s discuss their logging practices now because they’re vital to this 2026 comparison.
We’ll begin with Hotspot Shield, which claims to have a no-log policy but in reality, still keeps more than a few logs on its servers. They include:
- Browser types
- Device types
- Operating system
- ISP name and network information
- Connection timestamps
- Referring URLs
- Approximate location based on your IP address, and more.

This doesn’t exactly represent a VPN no-log policy. Since Hotspot Shield stores your approximate location, it must have your IP address, which instantly means the IP is likely stored. The provider states benign reasons for using this info but we’re hard-pressed to trust it.
NordVPN’s privacy policy is more privacy-oriented. It doesn’t store a single bit of identifying information. Definitely not your IP address, timestamps, visited websites, device information, referring URLs, geolocation, etc. What’s more, NordVPN has multiple third-party audits.

PwC and Deloitte worked with the provider a few times on auditing its entire infrastructure, including a no-log policy. Hotspot Shield has an audit from AV-Test for being the fastest and most secure VPN but that’s a rather vague statement.
NordVPN is our winner here. It doesn’t log your sensitive data while its rival clearly does.

Which VPN Is Faster: NordVPN or Hotspot Shield?
So far, we refuted AV-Test’s claim that Hotspot Shield is the safest VPN you can use.
But is it the fastest?
Does the Hydra protocol make a difference and can it beat NordLynx? Before we uncover our NordVPN vs Hotspot Shield speed test results, let’s glance at our native speeds.

At the time of testing, we were in Belgrade, which can be seen above.
For the most accurate results, we tested the providers 3 times a day, repeating our tests 3 days in a row. We also used 3 server locations, which include the UK, the USA, and Japan. Before each test, we manually set the protocol to the fastest one.
As said, these protocols are Hydra in Hotspot Shield and NordLynx in NordVPN.
The table below displays average speed losses in percentages, where we can notice that NordVPN was faster. The difference is more than enough to be noticed, especially if you have a slower native internet connection.
| Download Speed Loss | Upload Speed Loss | |
| NordVPN | 18% | 7% |
| Hotspot Shield | 38% | 41% |
This test would be incomplete without our average speed test results.
| UK (Download/Upload) | US (Download/Upload) | Japan (Download/Upload) | |
| NordVPN | 324.25/18.68 Mbps | 292.75/18.31 Mbps | 223.54/17.85 Mbps |
| Hotspot Shield | 239.81/14.93 Mbps | 215.84/9.43 Mbps | 178.14/10.21 Mbps |
The table above gives you just that, where we can notice that Hotspot Shield held its composure on the UK server. The farther we went, the more the performance was “suffocated” in Hotspot Shield, while NordVPN’s performance decreases were far less dramatic.
These results speak for themselves and tell us that NordVPN is faster than Hotspot Shield.

Streaming & Torrenting Comparison
So far, NordVPN has taken the reins and wiped the floor with Hotspot Shield. Perhaps this round can give Hotspot Shield fans some hope. Let’s see.
Streaming Performance
Our NordVPN vs Hotspot Shield streaming test was a close one.
Both possess impeccable streaming optimization, which isn’t “pronounced” in NordVPN but it is in Hotspot Shield. NordVPN rarely advertises itself as a streaming VPN but there it is with its ability to access dozens of Netflix libraries and all other prominent services.

Hotspot Shield has this streaming mode, which optimizes using a VPN for Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, YouTube, etc. Our tests have shown impressive performance on its side, as Hotspot Shield managed to access all prevalent Netflix libraries from the USA, Japan, Canada, UK, etc.

The same goes for other services. For instance, you can watch Pluto TV abroad with both and access Sky Sports anywhere. BBC iPlayer and Max will also work flawlessly in both cases, which levels the playing field and makes Hotspot Shield on par with NordVPN.
Torrenting Performance
Torrenting is seemingly on par as well.
NordVPN has P2P-ready servers but so does Hotspot Shield. After testing them, we found that they perform very closely speed-wise but we’re afraid the “background” isn’t the same.

As we clarified earlier, NordVPN doesn’t keep any logs, so it’s perfectly safe for this purpose.
Now, Hotspot Shield’s logging policy is a bit “flimsy”. The provider keeps quite a few “things” on its servers, so we’re not sure torrenting is smart with it. One thing is P2P support – it’s there. But if you often do this, we recommend NordVPN just to have peace of mind.

Let’s digress.
The providers perform roughly the same for streaming. NordVPN is better than Hotspot Shield for torrenting because of its privacy. This grants an additional point to NordVPN which takes this round.
Take Streaming & P2P to Another Level With NordVPN
Server Locations
Remember the time when Hotspot Shield had over 3,000 servers? If we weren’t dreaming, this was the case for a good few years until its network magically dwindled to just 800 servers in 125+ locations. Nowadays, Hotspot Shield isn’t as popular as it used to be.
| Hotspot Shield | NordVPN | |
| Servers | 800+ | 7,000+ |
| Locations | 85+ | 118+ |
In the other corner sits NordVPN with an imposing network of 7,000+ servers in almost 120 countries and way more locations because of city-level servers.
We don’t need to examine them further to notice that NordVPN has ~9 times more servers than its competitor. It also has ~30 countries on top, resulting in a superior server distribution globally. Dedicated servers are there in both and we can’t file any complaints here.
Some of them include:
- Tor over VPN
- Streaming
- Gaming
- Torrenting
- Obfuscated
- Double VPN
Yes, Hotspot Shield has gaming VPN servers for Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, etc. But in our tests, they showed no more prowess than the “normal” servers on the list. NordVPN’s server fleet is larger but also reliant on RAM, which translates to an admirable quality level.
That said, NordVPN wins yet another round.
Which VPN Is More Efficient at Bypassing Censorship?
Before we call it quits, let’s see which VPN provider is better for China, Hotspot Shield or NordVPN.
The former claims to work there but our tests imply that this is 50% true. Yes, you can make it work with obfuscation and a bit of protocol juggling but 5 out of 10 times, you’ll run into some problem that won’t allow you to connect. This is still a good result in our book.
For example, Proton VPN doesn’t work in China at all!
If you need a better performer, switch over to NordVPN. Using its obfuscated servers, our Chinese friends were able to circumvent the firewall and enjoy the internet normally, as if they were in a luxury tourist hotel in Bejing or Zhenshen.
NordVPN and Hotspot Shield work equally well in other censored countries if that means anything to you. They’re suitable for Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkey, Russia, and more.
But because of China and its more reliable performance there, NordVPN snatches the win.
Conclusion: NordVPN Is Better Than Hotspot Shield
The worst offense to a VPN is when its competitor is superior and costs less. That’s what transpired in this Hotspot Shield vs NordVPN comparison for 2026.
We don’t need to calculate the score to admit that NordVPN has essentially beaten Hotspot Shield to a pulp in every aspect, except for compatibility and ease of use. It costs less while also pumping out more features and “freebies” like NordLocker and NordPass.
Not to mention Hotspot Shield’s waving red flag. Its intrusive logging practices.
At the money you’ll pay, privacy should be undeniable. We expected far more. But as things stand, we can’t recommend Hotspot Shield next to the giant such as NordVPN. The latter remains a better and more affordable pick by all merits. Get it. You won’t regret it a bit.
