Both providers cover the platforms most people need. Hotspot Shield has clients for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Smart TV, while NordVPN adds Linux to that list. Both support routers, Fire TV, and gaming consoles through a router. If you need a VPN for a Smart TV, neither will let you down. Connection allowances match at 10 devices. Hotspot Shield’s app is well designed.
A large connect button anchors the home screen, and once you’re online, it shows data consumption, peak speed, and server details in the same view. NordVPN’s client opens on a clickable world map, with a searchable server list above it for anyone who prefers typing to clicking.
Changing your IP takes one click, and most features are on the home screen. Only the protocol switch and kill switch need a trip into Settings. Two well-built apps with the same device allowance and the same platform coverage.

Hotspot Shield’s Premium plan opens at $29 for the first year, which is $2.42/mo and one of the lowest introductory prices. It then auto-renews at $95.99 a year, or $8.00/mo. Which one costs less depends entirely on how long you stay. Over one year, Hotspot Shield is cheaper. $29 vs roughly $66 for NordVPN’s annual plan is a difference nobody can argue with. Over 27 months, NordVPN is cheaper.
Its 2-year term totals $94.23 for the period. Hotspot Shield across the same window comes to $148.99, because only the first 12 months carry the introductory rate. Renewal favors Hotspot Shield. $95.99/year against NordVPN’s $139.08 is $43 a year in its favor, though NordVPN’s renewal buys a network 12 times the size. Both are VPN services in the standard sense, so the fundamentals overlap:

The kill switches differ in one respect. Both cut your connection when the tunnel drops. NordVPN adds an advanced mode that refuses any traffic unless the VPN is active, which matters more in censored regions than at home. It also includes an app-level kill switch, which you won’t find elsewhere.
Protocols
Hotspot Shield’s Hydra protocol is OpenVPN TLS that improves speed and provides obfuscation in one package. IPSec and OpenVPN are the alternatives. NordLynx is NordVPN’s WireGuard build, modified with a double NAT system so no user IP address is written to disk, which resolves WireGuard’s one privacy weakness.

Advanced Protection
Hotspot Shield’s anti-phishing protection warns you off sites known for malware and tracking, and its DNS filter blocks categories of content. We used the filter as parental control against gambling and adult sites, and it worked reliably. Smart VPN handles the connection automatically, and the provider adds PKI security checks and TLS connection establishment underneath both.
NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro goes further, blocking malware, trackers, and ads while scanning downloads in real time and quarantining anything malicious. It requires Complete or above.
Everything Else
Hotspot Shield’s remaining extras are a traffic proxy plus gaming and streaming server categories. The proxy offers no encryption, and the specialty servers are convenience features instead of security ones. NordVPN’s list is longer:
- Double VPN chains two servers in different countries so neither one holds both ends of the connection.
- Dark Web Monitor alerts you when your email or password appears in a breach, and names the site.
- Meshnet links up to 60 of your own devices privately, which also helps get around geo-blocks through a device in another country.
Browser extensions come free with a subscription and add location spoofing and WebRTC leak protection, useful for streaming and heavy geo-blocks.

NordVPN Stores Less Logs Than Hotspot Shield
Both VPNs keep no record of your browsing. The difference is in what else they hold, and whether anyone independent has checked. Jurisdiction is split in Hotspot Shield. It comes from Anchorfree LLC in Boston or Pango GmbH in Stans, Switzerland, part of the Pango Group, so which entity holds your data depends on where you are. NordVPN operates from Panama, with no retention laws.
Hotspot Shield’s no-log claim holds on the question that matters. Your IP is encrypted the moment you connect and deleted when the session ends, and it’s never stored against your activity. Traffic contents aren’t inspected or recorded. It states that a seized server would yield nothing showing revealing. Three things get logged:
- Session duration and bandwidth consumed, used for support and free-tier limits
- The domain names visited, without full URLs, anonymized so no user is attached to any domain, and aggregated monthly
- Device hashes, random IDs that identify a device across sessions and connect to bandwidth data, support history, analytics, and marketing
Hotspot Shield doesn’t record which user visited which site, so this is a long way from a browsing history. NordVPN records no domains, aggregated or otherwise. Device hashes aren’t tied to browsing activity, and Hotspot Shield explains why it needs them. Several of its products work without an account, so it has no other way to tell devices apart. They’re a persistent identifier used partly for marketing.
NordVPN’s servers are RAM-only. Hotspot Shield’s notice refers to breaking disk encryption on its servers, which means data is written to encrypted disks. PwC and then Deloitte have audited NordVPN’s infrastructure and no-logs policy 6 times, recently in February 2026. Hotspot Shield has commissioned speed and security testing. It’s why it doesn’t appear in our most secure VPN rankings.

Hydra’s whole purpose is speed, so this round tests the claim directly. Both providers were set to their fastest protocol, Hydra for Hotspot Shield and NordLynx for NordVPN. We tested the VPNs from Southeastern Europe, 3 times a day across 3 consecutive days, on UK, US, and Japanese servers.

Hotspot Shield held up best on the UK server, giving back 26% against NordVPN’s result there. Its US and Japanese figures fell 26% and 20% short of NordVPN’s. Upload is where the two separate the most: Hotspot Shield managed 9.43 Mbps to the US, where NordVPN held 18.31, roughly half.

Here’s who beats who.
Streaming
This half is a genuine draw. Hotspot Shield’s streaming mode opens Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and YouTube, and it reached the US, Japanese, Canadian, and UK Netflix libraries in our tests. NordVPN keeps no dedicated streaming category and doesn’t need one, opening dozens of Netflix regions along with everything else we pointed it at.
Both handled BBC iPlayer and Max, both played Pluto TV abroad, and both opened Sky Sports. Nothing to choose between them.
Torrenting
Transfer speeds were close. The difference is structural. NordVPN allows P2P on every server, so you never have to hunt for the right one.
Hotspot Shield supports P2P too, and keeps no record of what moves through the tunnel. What it does retain is diagnostic data and a per-device hash.

NordVPN has roughly 12 times the servers. Hotspot Shield counts 125+ virtual locations served by 800+ machines, so the address you get often isn’t hosted in the country it claims. NordVPN’s 149 figure counts countries with servers in them. Specialty categories exist on both sides. Hotspot Shield offers Tor over VPN plus streaming and gaming servers for Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft.

However, the gaming servers performed no better than standard ones in our tests in those games. NordVPN answers with many obfuscated servers, Double VPN, Onion over VPN, and dedicated IPs as a paid add-on. NordVPN’s fleet holds nothing through a reboot, while Hotspot Shield’s own privacy notice refers to disk encryption on its servers, which points to disks instead of memory.

Bypassing Censorship: NordVPN is Better
China is the test that separates providers here. Hotspot Shield connects there about half the time. Obfuscation and some protocol switching will get you online, and the other five attempts out of ten fail. For a provider that doesn’t market itself on censorship, that’s a respectable showing. NordVPN’s obfuscated servers over OpenVPN TCP connected consistently from the mainland.
NordWhisper handles the softer filtering found on school and office networks by tunneling through web traffic, and it’s selectable from the protocol list. Hotspot Shield isn’t alone in struggling. Proton VPN connects there only intermittently despite its Stealth protocol, so a coin flip is closer to the category norm than an outlier.
Elsewhere, the two are even. Both work in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkey, and Russia, where the filtering is typically far less capable.
