Does Proton VPN Work in China? Setup and Backups for 2026

Proton VPN’s own help center is unusually frank about China. The company says it has some evidence that its VPN works on the mainland at times, but it won’t promise it, and it confirms that the service works normally in Hong Kong.

That’s a careful answer from a Swiss VPN that built its name on privacy. For a trip, it leaves a practical question: can you rely on Proton VPN behind the Great Firewall, or should it travel with a backup? Much of the answer depends on what you set up before you leave.

Why Proton VPN Struggles in China

China operates the most capable censorship system on the internet, and Freedom House rates it the worst environment for internet freedom, a position it has kept for over a decade. The Great Firewall blocks sites by IP address and DNS.

On top of that, it uses deep packet inspection, which studies the shape of traffic, so it can spot a VPN connection even when it can’t read what’s inside. Stealth is Proton’s answer. It wraps the connection in a TLS tunnel that looks like ordinary HTTPS traffic, and Proton includes it on every plan, the free one too.

It does work, but only until the firewall’s operators update their detection, and then it can fail for days at a time. Proton’s own website doesn’t load there either, so new accounts and app downloads have to happen before the trip.

How Reliable Is Proton VPN in China?

In short, Proton VPN can work in China, but you can’t count on it. That’s a letdown, because getting past censorship is one of the main reasons to use a VPN in the first place. Speed is the other cost.

On a Hong Kong server with Stealth on, Proton VPN lost 68.1% of our download speed, the weakest obfuscated result of the four VPNs we tested there. That still covers browsing, messaging, and even 4K video. Upload speed fell much further, however, so sending photos or large files home takes a while. That result is specific to long distances.

On our UK server, for example, Stealth cost Proton VPN almost nothing, and the VPN remains one of the most secure VPNs we’ve tested.

How to Set Up Proton VPN for China in 2026

Create the account and install the apps before you arrive, then sign in on every device while you still have an open connection. That one step prevents the most common failure: being locked out of a VPN you’ve already paid for.

Next, set up the app for the firewall. In the Windows app:

• Open Settings, select Protocol, and choose Stealth.
• In Settings, open Advanced settings and make sure Alternative routing is switched on. Proton enables it by default.
• Return to the home screen and connect to a nearby server, such as Japan or Singapore.

On Android and iPhone, Protocol is also in the app’s settings. When Proton VPN won’t connect, switch between Stealth and the Smart protocol first. After that, try more distant servers in Canada or the US, which Proton suggests when the nearby ones are blocked.

Then quit the app completely and relaunch it instead of only toggling the connection. If none of that helps, it’s time to switch to your backup VPN.

ExpressVPN is the other strong Proton VPN alternative for China, mainly because obfuscation turns itself on. There’s no setting to find, so you aren’t digging through menus when a connection fails late at night in a new city.

It was also the fastest VPN on our Hong Kong obfuscation test, losing 29.8% of our download speed while upload barely changed. Beyond speed, Lightway, its own protocol, now uses post-quantum encryption, which is designed to protect traffic against future quantum computers.

Its servers use RAM only, so nothing is kept once they restart, and independent auditors have examined that setup. As for price, the two-year Basic plan costs about $3 a month, close to what NordVPN charges.

3. Surfshark: Best Value Proton VPN Alternative for China

Surfshark costs the least of the three, and it’s one of the strongest VPNs at any price. Two settings matter in China, and they’re easy to confuse. Camouflage Mode disguises the connection, and it switches on whenever you use OpenVPN.

NoBorders, meanwhile, detects a restricted network and suggests servers that are more likely to connect. For that reason, switch the protocol from WireGuard to OpenVPN in the app before you travel. On our Hong Kong server with Camouflage Mode on, Surfshark lost 32.4% of its download speed and kept nearly all of its upload speed.

On regular servers, it’s also among the fastest VPNs we’ve tested. CleanWeb also removes ads and trackers, which helps pages load on a slow hotel connection. Does Proton VPN Free Work in China in 2026?

Sometimes, and less often than the paid plan. The free plan includes Stealth, so the disguise is the same. The difference is server choice. Free accounts can’t choose a country or a server, so when the assigned server is blocked, there’s no way to move to a better one, and repeated server changes make you wait.

Verdict

For a trip to China, Proton VPN works best as the spare. Its open-source apps and audit record still count, as our Proton VPN review explains, but none of that helps if the connection won’t start when you arrive in Beijing.

NordVPN makes the better main connection, and Proton VPN can be kept ready for the days NordVPN’s servers are blocked. A second subscription costs a few dollars a month, far less than a week cut off from email and maps.
