Proton VPN has 61 servers in Johannesburg, and in our tests they kept more of our speed than NordVPN’s or ExpressVPN’s, with a speed loss of about 17%. VPN Accelerator, a Proton tool that speeds up long-distance connections, helps when you connect from Europe, Australia, or North America.

Proton is based in Switzerland, its no-logs policy has been independently audited several times, and its apps are open source, so outside experts can read the code. The apps look and work the same on Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone, Apple TV, and Fire TV, and they connect in a second or two. Next to NordVPN, it has fewer settings to adjust, but its Automatic protocol, which picks the connection type for you, worked in every test we ran.

It unblocked all 14 streaming services in our tests, Netflix US included. MediaStreamer, its Smart DNS service, sets up in the network settings of a Samsung or LG TV and changes the region the TV reports to streaming apps, without the encryption of a full VPN.

Its no-logs policy has been tested in US courts, where requests for user data turned up nothing, and MACE, its built-in blocker, blocks ads and trackers before pages load.

On its South African server, PIA caused a speed loss of about 34% over a long-distance connection, close to ExpressVPN’s result and enough for HD streams. Smart DNS, set up from your PIA account page, helps a console or TV without VPN app support unblock overseas catalogs.

5. Surfshark: Best Value for Overseas Streaming

Surfshark unblocked every streaming service in our tests except ITVX, so Netflix US, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer work from South Africa at a low price. Like NordVPN, it sells a dedicated IP address in Johannesburg, which keeps banking logins from abroad on one familiar local IP address.

CleanWeb, its blocker, removes ads and malicious sites in the browser, and Alternative ID gives you a masked email address for sign-ups on every plan. The Surfshark One plan adds antivirus and data breach alerts, a lighter version of what dedicated identity theft protection services offer.

What to Look For in a South Africa VPN

Before you buy a VPN for South African use, check these six things:

• Servers in South Africa. DStv Stream, SABC+, and South African banks read your IP address, so the VPN requires servers in the country to get a South African IP address from abroad.

South African TV Abroad After Showmax

Showmax closed after Canal+ took over MultiChoice, and its library moved to DStv Stream, starting from the Compact package. Canal+ plans to bring its own streaming app to South Africa later, but for now DStv Stream is the home of Showmax originals.

DStv Stream works only in the African countries DStv serves, and it requires an active DStv subscription. SABC+ has free registration, but its live TV and catch-up shows are limited to South Africa, while SABC News, radio, and podcasts work worldwide.

Privacy and VPN Use in South Africa

VPNs are legal in South Africa, and the government doesn’t block them. Privacy online is still a fair concern. Every SIM card is registered to its owner’s ID under RICA, the country’s interception law, and in 2021 the Constitutional Court found that the state’s bulk interception of communications had no legal basis.
