Best VPN for Spain in 2026: Streaming, LaLiga Blocks, and Privacy

On LaLiga match nights, ordinary websites in Spain stop loading. A court order lets the league have Spanish ISPs block IP addresses linked to pirate football streams, and because many legitimate sites share those IP addresses, hundreds of thousands of unrelated pages go dark until the final whistle.

That’s the newest reason to use a VPN in Spain, next to the older ones. Spanish law makes your ISP keep data about your connections for a year, public Wi-Fi at airports and beach bars is easy to snoop on, and Spanish TV apps such as RTVE Play and Atresplayer limit much of their content to viewers in Spain.

Best VPN for Spain in 2026: How Each One Performed

1. NordVPN: Best Overall VPN for Spain

NordVPN has more than 60 servers in Madrid and Barcelona, and its Madrid server lost only 6.8% of our speed. On its Spanish servers, it unblocked Netflix Spain, Rakuten TV, and Atresplayer, and for Americans living in Madrid or Barcelona, it also unblocks American TV from Spain on a US server.

Proton VPN was the surprise of our Spanish tests. Its Madrid server lost just 6.6% of our speed, a touch less than NordVPN’s, and on Spanish servers it unblocked RTVE Play and Atresplayer. VPN Accelerator, a Proton tool that speeds up long-distance connections, also helps when you connect to Madrid from the UK or Latin America.

Privacy is where Proton is strongest. The company is based in Switzerland, its no-logs policy has been independently audited, and the code behind its apps is public. 3. ExpressVPN: Best for Simple Apps on Every Screen

On its Spanish servers, ExpressVPN unblocked the main Spanish channels in HD, so expats can catch the evening news from Berlin or London as if they were home. Its Madrid server lost 10% of our speed, still well above what an HD stream requires. From Spain, it unblocked every overseas service in our tests, including Netflix US and HBO Max.

Lightway, its own protocol, connects in a second or two, and the apps work the same way on a phone, a laptop, or an Apple TV, which keeps setup easy for the whole family. 4. Private Internet Access: Best for Covering Every Device at Home

Private Internet Access puts no limit on devices, so the phones, laptops, smart TV, and console in a shared flat in Madrid can stay on one subscription. When US courts asked for its user data, it had none to hand over, which makes it one of the VPNs with the best no-log policy.

Its servers in Madrid and Valencia unblocked Atresplayer and DAZN. MACE, its built-in blocker, stopped 96% of ads and trackers in our test, a better score than any other VPN app’s blocker we’ve tested, and it puts PIA among the VPNs with the best built-in ad blockers.

It didn’t work with Prime Video or HBO Max in our tests, so for American catalogs, NordVPN or ExpressVPN is the safer choice. Why Websites Fail in Spain During LaLiga Matches

Since February 2025, a Barcelona court order has let LaLiga hand Spain’s main ISPs, including Movistar, Vodafone, and DIGI, lists of IP addresses to block while matches are on. The targets are pirate football streams, but many of them hide behind Cloudflare and other networks that thousands of legitimate sites share.

The collateral damage is large. OONI, a nonprofit that studies internet censorship, estimated that more than 550,000 legitimate domains were caught by the blocks at some point between January and June 2026, including the websites of Amnesty International and Greenpeace.

The blocks returned with the 2026-27 season, starting shortly before kickoff and lifting after the final whistle. A VPN fixes this for legitimate sites. Your ISP sees only an encrypted connection to the VPN server, so it can’t match the blocked IP address, and the site loads through the server instead. Euronews confirmed it in September 2026.

Sites that failed on a Spanish connection during a match worked over a VPN server outside Spain.  The order still targets piracy, and a VPN doesn’t change the law on pirate streams. During match times, connect to a server in France or Portugal for the most reliable result, then switch back to Madrid afterward.

Privacy Rules and Online Blocks in Spain

VPNs are legal in Spain, and the government doesn’t block them. Privacy at the ISP level is another matter. Law 25/2007 requires Spanish telecom operators to keep data about your connections, such as the IP addresses involved, times, and location, for 12 months, and authorities can request it with a court order.

The law doesn’t cover the content of what you do online, but the metadata alone shows a lot about your habits. With a VPN connected, your ISP’s records show a connection to a VPN server and nothing about the sites you visit afterward.

Spain has also blocked websites for political reasons. In 2017, courts ordered ISPs to block sites with information about the Catalan independence referendum, including pages that told people where to vote. Copyright law applies over a VPN too, so torrenting pirated films is as illegal on a VPN as it is without one.
