TunnelBear’s app is the most charming in the category, and it isn’t close. A cartoon bear tunnels across a world map to whichever country you pick, the copy avoids jargon entirely, and the whole thing resizes to full screen on desktop. For a first-time user, it’s disarming in a way no rival attempts.
NordVPN trades whimsy for reach. Its interface centres on a clickable map with settings a tap away, and it behaves identically on a phone or a PC. They part on hardware. TunnelBear supports Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.
That’s the complete list, with nothing for Linux, routers, televisions, or consoles. NordVPN handles all of those, and its browser extension adds location spoofing that TunnelBear’s doesn’t attempt. Device allowances favour TunnelBear: unlimited connections against NordVPN’s 10.

NordVPN’s two-year Basic plan works out to $3.49/mo with 3 bonus months. Spending a little more brings Threat Protection Pro and NordPass, and the top tiers add NordLocker storage plus Coveron, the identity protection service. 12-month terms sit nearer $5.49 per month and above.

TunnelBear’s pricing is unusual. Its annual and three-year plans carry the same $3.33 monthly figure, which looks like a mistake until you read the small print: the annual rate covers year one only. The three-year commitment is $120 up front, and renewal jumps to $59.88 annually, close to $5 monthly.
Two other differences matter here. TunnelBear offers a free plan with 2 GB a month, which NordVPN has no answer to. It also offers no money-back guarantee at all. Refunds are decided case by case, whereas NordVPN gives you 30 days unconditionally. That is a huge plus for me.

NordVPN is way ahead of TunnelBear here; here’s why.
Shared Features
The overlap is wide: 256-bit encryption, a kill switch (app-level in NordVPN), split tunneling, obfuscation, leak protection, and a protocol descended from WireGuard. TunnelBear names these VigilantBear, SplitBear, and GhostBear. NordVPN’s kill switch can refuse all traffic before a tunnel exists, not merely when one collapses, more than a standard kill switch does.
Where TunnelBear puts ad blocking in a separate Chrome extension, NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro covers what you’d otherwise buy standalone software for: filtering ads and trackers, blocking hostile domains, and inspecting downloads before they reach the disk. It works so much better.
Advanced Features: NordVPN Wins Decisively
TunnelBear has no exclusive features. NordVPN has several. Double VPN sends data through one country and out through another, encrypting at each stage, so neither endpoint holds the whole picture. Onion Over VPN pushes you into the Tor network straight from the app, with no separate browser.
This is one of the safest ways into the dark web. Meshnet stitches your own hardware into a private network, so a laptop in a hotel can reach a desktop at home as though the two shared a desk. That also happens to sidestep the Netflix password-sharing rules. Underneath sit NordLynx, NordVPN’s build of WireGuard reworked so a session can’t be tied back to an address at the server.
NordWhisper is usable for heavily filtered networks, a post-quantum cipher that hardens NordLynx against decryption by hardware nobody has built yet, private DNS, and RAM-only infrastructure. TunnelBear publicises none of this.

Both Have Audited No-Log Policies in 2026
Both hold audited no-log policies, and this is the round TunnelBear was built for. TunnelBear keeps no IP, DNS queries, traffic metadata, or site history. Free users have data counted, which is unavoidable given the 2 GB ceiling. Its credential is the audit record: Cure53 has examined the apps, servers, and backend every year since 2017, nine reports in total, each published openly.
It was the first commercial VPN to commission one, and no competitor has matched the consistency. NordVPN retains nothing traceable either. Deloitte signed that in February 2026, the sixth such review stretching back to 2018. Jurisdiction is where NordVPN pulls ahead. Panama imposes no retention obligation. TunnelBear sits in Toronto and McAfee has owned it since 2018.
This layers US corporate reach on top of Canadian law. That exposure is worth more thought than the Canadian address suggests. As our IPVanish review shows, a Five Eyes base needn’t be disqualifying, though it raises the bar for everything else. NordVPN also holds RAM-only servers; TunnelBear doesn’t.

Nine measurements per VPN, taken over three days from Southeastern Europe, my location at the time of testing them, using British, American, and Japanese endpoints with each app set to its fastest protocol.

NordVPN Beats TunnelBear in Streaming and P2P
Streaming is not what TunnelBear was designed for, and the results reflect that. Netflix US opens, BBC iPlayer works intermittently before detection catches up, and the tougher platforms stay shut. No streaming-tuned locations exist to try instead. NordVPN effortlessly unblocked 20+ Netflix catalogs alongside Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and a spread of regional TV channels.
Its browser extension handles platforms that verify location separately. Higher speeds keep 4K stable, which is part of why free Super Bowl streams stay watchable. Torrenting is closer. TunnelBear permits P2P on paid plans and blocks it on the free tier, though it doesn’t optimize for it or advertise support.
NordVPN allows it across the entire network, having merged its separate torrent category into the main fleet in 2026. Nearby servers gave similar results on both, which is where you want to be for P2P regardless of provider.

The country counts aren’t: 149 against 47 means NordVPN reaches three times as many places, and TunnelBear’s absences are conspicuous across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Composition compounds it. TunnelBear sells one undifferentiated pool with no dedicated addresses and no specialized categories at all.

NordVPN is Better at Bypassing Censorship
GhostBear does its job on ordinary restricted networks, hotel Wi-Fi and campus filtering, and it costs you noticeable speed while doing it. In China it doesn’t connect, and TunnelBear makes no claim otherwise.
