Pick a US server in the VPN app, then delete nbc.com’s cookies and refresh the page. From outside the US, NBC.com shows a geo-restriction message on every video. We used New York servers, and NBC didn’t detect NordVPN, Proton VPN, or ExpressVPN there or in Seattle, even though it blocks IP addresses it links to proxies and VPNs. Free episodes played without an account once the US IP address was in place.
Server choice depends on where you watch from. Viewers in the UK and the rest of Europe are closest to the East Coast, where New York servers showed a ping of 113 to 118 ms from our test PC. From Australia or Asia, a West Coast server is the shorter trip, as our guide to US TV in Australia shows.
Tip: Samsung and LG TVs don’t support VPN apps, but NordVPN’s Smart DNS changes the TV’s streaming location without one. A VPN set up on the router covers every device at home, including game consoles.
What Plays Free on NBC and What Requires a Login
Seven channels in NBC.com’s live guide stream free, with no account:
- NBC News NOW and Noticias Telemundo AHORA, NBCUniversal’s 24/7 news streams in English and Spanish
- NBC Sports NOW, with NFL talk shows such as PFT Live
- Bravo Vault and The Real Housewives Vault, which replay older seasons of Bravo shows such as Vanderpump Rules
- Telemundo Al Día and a Telemundo channel of soccer shows
The newest episodes of current series also play without a login, though NBC’s help pages say some unlock only eight days after broadcast. Other channels and services require payment, and they also check for a US IP address:
- TV provider login: the main NBC channel, Bravo East and West, the local Telemundo station, Universo, and regional networks such as NBC Sports Philadelphia require a subscription from a US cable, satellite, or streaming TV company, such as Comcast Xfinity. NBC sells no standalone live pass.
- Peacock: the Premium plan, about $13 a month, adds next-day NBC shows and live sports, and Premium Plus, about $20 a month, adds the local NBC channel live. - Live TV services: YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Fubo include NBC. YouTube TV’s live channels worked on Proton VPN and ExpressVPN, but NordVPN couldn’t unblock it, and Proton VPN couldn’t unblock Hulu.
Existing US subscriptions work abroad as normal over the VPN.
NBC Sports and Telemundo From Abroad
NBC’s biggest live sports also stream on Peacock, so a Peacock Premium account covers most of them outside the US:

NordVPN unblocked Hulu and Peacock, whose Hulu + Live TV and Premium Plus plans include live NBC. It offers servers in 55 US cities, including Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City, and its Smart DNS covers smart TVs as well. YouTube TV is the exception. NordVPN couldn’t unblock YouTube TV on several US servers, with or without the browser extension.
Every attempt ended on a black screen. On Windows, it also failed to connect at times while ExpressVPN was open in the background, and fixing it required diagnostics, an app restart, and a fresh sign-in. On a two-year term, the Basic plan costs about $3.50 a month, then around $139 a year.

On YouTube TV, Bravo and ESPN played live within seconds. It couldn’t unblock Hulu, which leaves Hulu + Live TV out as a way to watch NBC live.
Without Smart DNS, Samsung and LG sets require the VPN on the router, while Apple TV, Fire TV, and Android TV support its app. Proton VPN’s VPN Plus plan is about $3 a month for the first two years, and renewal is around $84 a year.

ExpressVPN connected within 2 seconds, and its app lists 63 US locations, including Philadelphia and Washington, DC. On YouTube TV, VH1 played in the app, and a local channel worked through the browser extension’s location spoofing with no extra setup.
Settings are sparse: setup is over in a minute, but little can be adjusted, and there’s still no multi-hop mode. The Basic plan is priced under $3 a month on its 28-month term, and renewal comes to about $100 a year.
NBC Still Showing a Region Error?
- Clear cookies and cache. A session started before the VPN connected can keep your actual location.
- Switch US cities. NBC flags individual IP addresses, so a server in Chicago or Los Angeles brings a new one. Our guide to getting past VPN blocks has more fixes.
- Try the browser extension. The NordVPN and ExpressVPN browser extensions have a location-spoofing setting that unblocked services their desktop apps couldn’t.
- Block location access. On YouTube TV, allowing browser location exposed our actual location and stopped every stream. Blocking it for the site restored playback.
- Use the website if the app is missing. Peacock’s app is limited to the US, and the NBC app may not appear in app stores abroad.

Free episodes and the seven free channels are the easy part: a US server is enough, and NBC.com played with no account on NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN. The main NBC channel adds a paid layer, whether that’s a US TV provider, Peacock Premium Plus, or a live TV service, and each requires US payment.
