• Public hotspots: The “xfinitywifi” network accepts non-customers with no password. A VPN encrypts traffic there and on the secured “XFINITY” network.
• Throttling: After the FCC ruled in 2008 that Comcast had slowed BitTorrent traffic, Comcast moved to congestion management that slows its heaviest users at busy times, regardless of the apps they use. A VPN can’t avoid that, and on US servers the VPNs we recommend lost from 4.7% (NordVPN) to 10.5% (Surfshark) of speed.
• Data caps: New Xfinity plans include unlimited data, and the 1.2 TB cap applies only to legacy plans. VPN traffic counts toward that cap like any other data.

What Is Xfinity VPN?

Xfinity VPN is Comcast’s own mobile VPN, part of Advanced Security on the go. Customers with xFi Complete enable it in the Xfinity app, which installs a VPN profile on an iPhone or Android phone. It connects automatically when the phone joins an unsecured Wi-Fi network, but isn’t a standalone free VPN.

It requires xFi Complete, it covers phones only, and Comcast’s support page describes no server or protocol options. Comcast operates it, so your browsing stays visible to Comcast. If a phone has connection problems away from home, Comcast’s advice is to disable Advanced Security on the go in the Xfinity app.

It unblocked every streaming service we tried, from Netflix US to Prime Video, with Disney+ requiring its browser extension.

Its Windows app was less reliable. With a second VPN merely installed on our test PC, NordVPN sometimes failed to connect until we restarted it and signed back in. Proton VPN’s Secure Core sends your traffic through a server in Switzerland, Iceland, or Sweden before it connects to the US. Our Switzerland-to-US connection measured 152.71 Mbps, 12.1% below its direct US server at 173.68 Mbps. NetShield blocked 93% of ads and trackers, and no traffic got past its kill switch when we unplugged the cable or ended the VPN process.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Quick Connections

ExpressVPN connected within two seconds on Windows, the quickest times we recorded, and its US server measured 177.03 Mbps. It has 63 US locations and router apps for selected models, which cover devices on an Xfinity network that don’t support VPN apps.

Lightway Turbo disables split tunneling, so switch to standard Lightway before excluding Xfinity Stream. Advanced Protection stopped 71% of ad and tracker requests but requires the Advanced plan. Surfshark allows unlimited devices on one subscription, so every phone, laptop, and TV in an Xfinity home can connect at once. Its US server measured 170.38 Mbps, and CleanWeb blocked 79% of ads and trackers. With the kill switch in Strict mode, no traffic got out after a PC restart.

It was also the only VPN we tested that unblocked Disney+ in its desktop app. Connections sometimes took longer than usual, but overall Surfshark was a positive surprise. Private Internet Access blocked 96% of ads and trackers with MACE, ahead of Proton VPN’s NetShield at 93%. Its US server measured 175.68 Mbps, and there’s no limit on devices. WireGuard requires a manual switch in Settings, since the Windows app starts on OpenVPN.

The kill switch worked when we unplugged the network cable and ended the VPN process, but unencrypted traffic leaked after a PC restart. How to Use a VPN With Xfinity
