Iowa just made you prove your age to watch porn. Here’s the catch

On July 1, Iowa becomes the 26th state to demand that adult sites check your ID at the door. If Pornhub does what it has done everywhere else, Iowans won't see a verification form. They'll see a wall. The interesting part isn't how to get past it. It's what the law quietly asks you to hand over in the first place.

This is written for adults 18 and over. Iowa’s law is meant to keep minors away from explicit content, which is a fair goal. What follows is about adults who would rather not attach their identity to a porn site to access legal material.

What Iowa’s porn law changes on July 1, 2026

Governor Kim Reynolds signed House File 864 on June 1, and it takes effect July 1, 2026. Any site or app where roughly a third of the content is adult material must now confirm that every visitor is 18 or older before granting access. Accepted proof is a digital ID, financial or transactional data, or another method blessed by the state attorney general.

The numbers behind it are not symbolic. Operators face fines of up to 1,000 dollars per illegal access, capped at 10,000 dollars a day, and the bill passed the Iowa Senate unanimously and the House 82 to 2. Iowa becomes one of more than 25 states with a rule like this, all of them modeled on the Texas law the Supreme Court upheld last year in a 6 to 3 ruling.

Is Pornhub banned in Iowa?

The law says verify ages. It does not dictate how a company complies, and Pornhub’s owner Aylo has consistently picked a third door: it leaves. RedTube, YouPorn, and Tube8 sit under the same corporate roof and have exited in lockstep each time. Aylo sites are already dark across roughly two dozen states and France, in the UK for new users since February, and in Australia since March.

Aylo’s argument is the same in every market. It says site-by-site age checks fail to protect minors while creating privacy risk, and it would rather see device-level verification built into Apple, Google, and Microsoft systems. Translation for Iowa: once the law is live, the likely outcome is a geo-block, not a verification prompt. The block isn’t live yet as this publishes, but Aylo’s record leaves little room for a surprise.

How to watch Pornhub in Iowa?

A VPN sends your traffic through a server elsewhere. Connect to one in another US state and the site reads a non-Iowa IP, so the state geo-block never fires. In practice it’s quick: subscribe, install the app on Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android, pick an out-of-state server, and load the page. Under two minutes, and your real location stays hidden from both the site and your internet provider.

On our test connection, NordVPN‘s NordLynx protocol held download speeds well past anything 4K streaming needs, and its US network covers dozens of cities, so a clean exit point is easy to find. The honest caveat: some adult platforms try to detect and refuse known VPN addresses.

NordVPN got through cleanly in testing, but no VPN works on every server indefinitely. If one stalls, another server in the same region usually fixes it. The two-year plan runs 3.37 dollars a month with a 30-day refund window, so a failed test costs nothing.

The part nobody’s really arguing about

Most adults who walk away from these sites after a law like this aren’t offended by proving they’re grown. They’re wary of what the proof requires. To clear any site-level check, you give a photo of your license or your card details to a third-party verifier whose only function is processing these checks for porn sites. That creates a record tying your name to adult content, held by a company you never chose.

Iowa’s law does instruct verifiers not to retain or sell that data, which matters. But the record still has to exist for the check to run, and it sits with an outfit you can’t audit. A VPN does not protect data you’ve already handed over. It lets you avoid handing it over at all, which is the actual point. When the UK rolled out its version, Pornhub lost close to 80 percent of its users almost overnight, and VPN demand spiked in step. None of this is illegal in Iowa: VPNs are legal, watching legal content as an adult is legal, and the block exists only because Pornhub declined the state’s terms.
