How Each Free Turkey VPN Performed

1. NordVPN: Best Free VPN for Turkey for 30 Days in 2026

NordVPN isn’t free, but its 30-day money-back guarantee lets you use every part of it for a month and still get your money back. Android users can start with a three-day trial too, explained in our NordVPN free trial guide. A month covers most holidays and work trips, and you keep the unlimited data and server choice that free plans limit.

Its Istanbul servers lost 7.2% of our speed, a difference you won’t notice while streaming or on a video call. They also unblocked Netflix Turkey and the other Turkish streaming services we tested, so Turks abroad can watch their usual shows. 2. Proton VPN: Best Paid VPN With a Free Plan to Fall Back On

Proton VPN covers Turkey in two ways. VPN Plus, its paid plan, includes 36 servers in Istanbul and a 30-day money-back guarantee, and once the month is over, the free plan keeps your connection encrypted at no cost. VPN Plus opens up servers in 149 countries and costs about $3 a month on a two-year plan.

Our Proton VPN review covers the paid version in full. On the Istanbul servers, Proton VPN lost 12% of our speed, enough for HD and 4K streams. It unblocked the Turkish streaming services we tested except Netflix Turkey, which detected it, so NordVPN or ExpressVPN is the better choice for Turkish Netflix.

The money-back guarantee is a full refund: cancel in your account dashboard and contact Proton support within 30 days of your first purchase. ExpressVPN is the simplest choice for networks that block VPNs. It obfuscates every connection automatically, so there’s no protocol to choose and no setting to find. You can start with a three-day trial on Android and iOS, described in our ExpressVPN free trial guide, and the 30-day money-back guarantee applies after that.

The trial requires a card, so cancel before it ends if you don’t plan to pay. Its Istanbul servers were the quickest Turkish servers in our tests, losing only 5.8% of our speed, which covers 4K streams, large downloads, and gaming with a VPN. Netflix Turkey worked, but it detected ExpressVPN now and then.

When that happened, I switched to the ExpressVPN browser extension in Brave, and the stream started normally. ExpressVPN has servers in 113 countries, its no-logs policy has been independently audited, and its RAM-only servers wipe everything on each restart. The Advanced plan adds tracker blocking, handy on ad-heavy adult sites.

Settings are few, so if you like fine-tuning protocols or routing traffic through two servers, NordVPN or Proton VPN offers more control. The two-year Basic plan comes in under $3 a month for ten devices.

4. PrivadoVPN: Best 100% Free VPN for Streaming

PrivadoVPN is the free VPN we’d keep on a phone for evenings of streaming in Turkey. Its free servers came close to paid VPNs in our speed tests, and they unblocked Netflix US, Channel 4, and BBC iPlayer on a free plan. Torrenting is allowed on the free servers, and Scramble, its obfuscation option, helps the connection get past networks that block VPNs.

The limit is 10 GB of data a month, which lasted us about five hours of HD video. When it runs out, PrivadoVPN moves you to slow emergency servers and keeps you connected, so blocked sites still load for basic browsing. The allowance doesn’t renew by itself, which is annoying, so make renewing it in the app part of the first day of each month.

PrivadoVPN is based in Iceland and keeps no logs, but that policy hasn’t been independently audited, and the free plan protects one device at a time. Its free servers cover ten countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK, with no Turkish location. 5. Hide.me: Best for Unlimited Free Data

Hide.me is the free VPN for people who don’t want to count gigabytes. Its free plan has no data cap, requires no card, and lets you pick from seven free locations, including Germany and Switzerland, which are closer to Turkey than the US. Proton VPN’s free plan, by comparison, chooses the server for you.

For blocked networks, Hide.me supports SoftEther, a protocol that wraps VPN traffic in the same SSL encryption websites use, so it looks like ordinary browsing. Hide.me is based in Malaysia and keeps no logs on its free plan either. Speed is the trade-off, and for me, the most serious one.

The free servers lost 30.5% of our speed on UK and US connections, fine for browsing, messaging, and SD video but slow for HD streams. It didn’t unblock any streaming service we tested and blocks torrenting, and free accounts connect one device at a time.

Keep it on your main phone or laptop for everyday browsing, and use a paid VPN when you want to stream video content or unblock sites.

6. TunnelBear: Best for Light, Occasional Use

TunnelBear has the friendliest apps of the free VPNs we tested, and it publishes an independent security audit every year, which our TunnelBear review covers. It also includes GhostBear, an obfuscation mode for networks that block VPNs, and a kill switch, which cuts your internet if the VPN drops so your real IP address doesn’t leak.

The free plan includes 2 GB a month, which about an hour of HD video uses up, and a VPN on Windows running background updates uses it up even faster. Free users can’t choose a server anymore, so the app decides where you connect.TunnelBear didn’t unblock Netflix US in our tests and doesn’t allow torrenting.

So keep it for maps, messaging, and the occasional blocked news site. The paid plan removes the cap and covers unlimited devices, but it still didn’t stream for us. If you’re willing to pay, NordVPN or ExpressVPN costs about the same and does far more.

What to Know Before Using a Free VPN in Turkey

• Install it before you travel. Turkey has blocked the websites of many well-known VPNs, so download the app and sign in on every device before you leave.
• Enable obfuscation on blocked networks. If a VPN won’t connect, switch to NordWhisper on NordVPN, Stealth on Proton VPN, Scramble on PrivadoVPN, or SoftEther on Hide.me. ExpressVPN obfuscates its connections automatically.
• Keep an eye on your data allowance. When a capped free VPN runs out of data, your traffic goes back to your normal connection, and blocked sites stop loading until the allowance renews.
• Pick a nearby server. From Turkey, a server in Germany, the Netherlands, or Romania keeps speeds higher than one in the US. Romania is on Proton VPN’s free list, but the free plan assigns servers itself.

• Mobile-only free VPNs: Many earn money from ads and data sharing, and few publish an independent audit.
