A year later, the government confirmed it won’t ban VPNs, so adults can keep using them. The open question is which free UK VPN deserves a place on your phone or laptop. The answer depends on the job.

In Britain, a free VPN protects your browsing at home and on public Wi-Fi. Abroad, it has to offer a British IP address that BBC iPlayer and other UK services accept. How the Five Free UK VPNs Rank

1. NordVPN: Best for ITVX and Live British TV

NordVPN is free only through its refund, but one British service puts it first: ITVX. ITVX blocked every free VPN we tested and most of the paid ones, while NordVPN unblocked it alongside BBC iPlayer and Channel 4. Its UK servers, spread across four cities, lost 3.0% of our speed.

2. Proton VPN: Best for Unlimited Free Data, With UK Servers on Paid

Proton VPN’s British servers are part of its paid VPN Plus plan. They unblocked BBC iPlayer and Channel 4 in our tests and lost 6.0% of our speed. However, Proton VPN couldn’t unblock ITVX. VPN Plus is under $3 a month with a two-year subscription, and it covers 10 devices. The free plan keeps privacy but removes the location choice.

Free accounts receive unlimited data without handing over card details, and Proton VPN’s audited no-logs policy covers them. Even so, Britain is missing from the free countries. Instead, Proton VPN connects you to a location such as the Netherlands or Switzerland, and switching servers repeatedly locks the button for a while.

So iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4 aren’t available on a free account. For private browsing at home or on public Wi-Fi, though, its Swiss base and open-source apps earn it a top spot in our free VPN ranking.

3. Windscribe: Best Free UK Server for Every Device

Windscribe comes closest to a paid VPN for British TV. Its free UK server unblocked BBC iPlayer and Channel 4, along with the US, Canadian, and Japanese Netflix catalogs, and lost 4.3% of our speed. Its free Chrome extension unblocked iPlayer as well. However, it couldn’t unblock ITVX, Prime Video, or Pluto TV.

Free accounts also skip the device limit, which we confirmed with five devices connected at once. The UK is one of ten free countries, alongside Germany and France, and every location uses physical servers. The allowance is the main constraint.

Accounts with a confirmed email have 10 GB a month, and in our tests, half an hour of iPlayer at the default quality used about 650 MB. That works out to roughly seven hours of iPlayer a month. When the allowance is gone, the connection stops until the next month begins.

4. PrivadoVPN: Best for Low Ping on a Free British Server

PrivadoVPN recorded the lowest UK ping of any VPN we tested, paid or free: 37 ms on its London server, with a 5.4% speed loss. For streaming, it unblocked BBC iPlayer, including BBC One live, and Channel 4. Even so, it couldn’t unblock ITVX, Prime Video, or Netflix Canada.

A free account covers one device with 10 GB per 30-day cycle, and a new cycle starts only when you renew it manually. After the data is gone, the connection continues on a backup server limited to roughly 1 Mbps, slow but usable for messages. Unlike Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN lets free users select the country, including the UK.

PrivadoVPN operates under Icelandic law, and its Scramble setting disguises VPN traffic on computers and phones alike. Its weakness is verification: its no-logs policy hasn’t been independently audited, unlike the no-logs VPNs that have passed audits, so you’re taking the company’s word for it.

5. Hide.me: Best for Unlimited Data on a Free UK Server

Hide.me is the only free VPN we tested with both a UK server and unlimited data. Its free accounts include split tunneling, which lets banking apps bypass the VPN while the browser remains protected, plus a choice of protocols. However, speed suffers for it.

Its free UK server lost 20.0% of our connection, the most of the five, and the free plan blocks streaming services, so BBC iPlayer showed a region message. As our Hide.me review explains, those blocks lift on the paid plans.

Is the UK Banning VPNs?

No. In a written statement to Parliament on July 15, 2026, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the government will not age-gate or ban VPNs, because they have legitimate privacy and security uses. For adults in the UK, using a VPN is legal.

The question came up after Online Safety Act age checks took effect on July 25, 2025, and VPN sign-ups in Britain jumped. In January 2026, the House of Lords backed an amendment to restrict VPNs for under-18s, and a government consultation then asked whether age checks should extend to VPNs.

Instead, the duty went to platforms, which must detect and stop children who use a VPN to get around age checks. Ofcom set out how in an assessment published on October 29, 2026. It suggested location signals, age estimation, and user reports to spot under-16s on VPNs, without requiring services to block VPN access.

Free VPNs and British TV

UK broadcasters check the IP address behind every request, so a TV licence paid at home doesn’t help with watching BBC iPlayer abroad. Each service treated the free VPNs differently:

• Netflix UK: It has a catalog of its own, so watching UK Netflix abroad means pairing a paid Netflix account with a British IP address.

Devices, Trials, and Data Limits on Free UK VPNs

At home, the reason to install a free VPN is privacy. Under the Investigatory Powers Act, UK ISPs can keep internet connection records for up to 12 months, and a VPN leaves only an encrypted connection to its server in those records. Free plans also limit how many devices you can protect.
