My Overall Experience

Brave VPN takes the lead, as its barren app leaves no room for mistakes. Once subscribed, you can activate your VPN within the browser. You’ll see a small app with a connection button and a server list. Pick the server, connect to it with a click, and you’re done. Everything is buttery-smooth. The VPN functions identically on iOS and Android. The only difference is that, on iOS, it offers a kill switch.

On other platforms, you get no tangible features. More about that in a second. NordVPN looks like this: an updated and revised app for 2026–

It’s much more complex, but as you know, VPNs are straightforward. You’ll get a server list on a whim, and you can connect to a server with a click. The mobile app has the same feeling, so there’s no learning curve. We like NordVPN’s lavish design with the world map and an excellent visual appeal. Meanwhile, its settings are cleverly sorted out, while highlighting features like Threat Protection and Meshnet.

Security: Why NordVPN is a Lot Safer to Use

How are NordVPN and Brave VPN Similar

NordVPN and Brave VPN share only two similarities:

We can also mention Brave VPN’s WireGuard, which is always welcome for speed and security. But it doesn’t do much performance-wise. Meanwhile, NordVPN uses NordLynx, WireGuard at its core, but slightly improved privacy-wise by NordVPN. Other than that, they offer advanced protection, but NordVPN’s encryption with NordLynx is actually quantum-secure, so it still has an edge in privacy and security.

Brave VPN has a firewall, which protects against trackers, ads, and malware. NordVPN’s Threat Protection does the same, but offers robust virus protection, thanks to real-time download protection that scans your device for malicious downloads. Unique Features: Only NordVPN Offers Them

We’ve confirmed that Brave VPN doesn’t offer unique features in our review. That’s not to say it’s unsafe. In fact, neither VPN displayed IP or DNS leaks in our tests. Still, NordVPN goes not one, not two, but hundreds of steps further to provide even more security. These include:

• Double VPN servers for encrypting traffic twice by routing it through two servers in different countries. I tested them, and while my speeds dropped a bit, enhanced security was worth the trade-off.
• Threat Protection Pro, which blocks malware, ads, and trackers, and supports real-time malware and virus scans. NordVPN updated it mid-2026, and it’s now even more efficient, detecting 99% of the new threats.
• NordWhisper, a protocol designed to combat network filtering.
• Onion over VPN servers, designed for use with Tor when you need access to the dark web safely and anonymously. I tested them using Tor and had zero issues unblocking sites on the dark web.
• NordPass, an optional add-on in the Plus plan, serving as a password manager for creating and storing your passwords safely.
• NordLocker, encrypted cloud storage with 1 TB of space, advanced file-sharing, and a no-logging policy.
• An advanced kill switch, which can work on the system level or on a per-app basis. I tried both by force-disabling NordVPN in the task manager, and they activated within miliseconds.

Logging: NordVPN and Brave VPN Don’t Store Logs

We’ve established that NordVPN has stronger security than Brave VPN, but what about privacy? Do these VPNs store logs, and more importantly, how do they handle your private information? In short, neither Brave VPN nor NordVPN stores logs, and to prove that, they have a few third-party audits. Brave VPN is US-based, while NordVPN’s jurisdiction is Panama. We could argue which is better, but it doesn’t matter.

And now, let’s examine NordVPN’s privacy policy:

They’re similar, promising no logging of your IP address, DNS requests, browsing history, and other vital information. Brave has been audited by Assured, while NordVPN has been audited by Deloitte six times, the last one in February 2026. What about stored information?

We also examined them and detected only a few irrelevant tidbits for troubleshooting and maintenance.  For instance, they’ll collect data about your simultaneous connections to enforce their limits. Other than that, they’re clean as a whistle. We forgot to mention that Brave VPN doesn’t use RAM or diskless servers. NordVPN does, and we think it’s a bit better for privacy, though some top VPNs also lack them.

Speed Tests: NordVPN is Actually Way Faster

Before we serve our speed test results on a silver platter, let’s inject some sense. Our starting point was a non-VPN speed test. The results are below; it’s a 50/10 Mbps connection tested in Belgrade, Serbia, where we resided during the comparison. We also performed our tests on a Windows 11 computer.

With this test in place, we fired up both VPNs and tested them for three days in a row, three times each day, using server locations in the UK, the US, and Japan. Distant locations were prioritized to fully stress VPN services and learn their speed retention rates. Their protocol selections were set to Automatic. With this setup and speed tests performed on the PC version of Speedtest, we achieved these results:

VPNs may decrease your internet speed, but some do it mildly. NordVPN is a prime example, while Brave VPN, with its underwhelming speed retention, won’t be ideal for bandwidth-hungry activities. The table above displays NordVPN’s superiority in all three tests. It’s a shame that Brave VPN couldn’t sustain at least 80% of our speeds on the UK server, as NordVPN and other best VPNs did. But there’s a reason for that, and it stems from Brave VPN’s 500 Mbps servers. NordVPN, in comparison, offers 10 Gbps.

We couldn’t leave you without streaming and torrenting tests. That’s what many people expect a VPN to do. So, are NordVPN and Brave VPN competent in these aspects? They are, but you’ll find NordVPN far better.

Streaming Test Results: NordVPN Absolutely Wins

Brave VPN’s streaming abilities are more limited. After testing BBC iPlayer at least 15 times, we couldn’t access it, no matter the browser, the server, or the device we used. We then used the same UK server to access Netflix UK, and while subscription prices were in British Pounds, we couldn’t unblock UK-only content. The same goes for the US library. Brave VPN unblocked a few free channels with F1 live streams, but they had no anti-VPN measures and posed no challenge even for free VPNs.

Noteworthy is that streaming quality was average, with a few hiccups and longer-than-expected load times. But then, we fired up NordVPN and felt reborn.

This VPN worked with over 20 Netflix libraries, including the most popular ones. BBC iPlayer? It worked like a charm in our location. Other channels? The same. NordVPN’s browser extension was fantastic, with location spoofing that allowed us to unblock Pluto TV and access it from the Balkans. Streaming quality was good, and everything from Full HD to Ultra HD was buttery-smooth, with minor and rare buffering.

Torrenting: Both VPNs are Good

Torrenting is allowed in both VPNs, but we’d give NordVPN a slight edge. NordVPN no longer has dedicated P2P servers, and now, all of them are suitable. However, torrenters will notice it’s very fast, and since I compared NordVPN to Brave VPN, I noticed it’s faster than its rival. That matters a lot for torrenting.

Brave VPN’s torrenting prowess can’t be disputed. While slower than NordVPN, it’s equally reliable and offers P2P on all servers. You just need to connect to the closest one, encrypt your traffic, and start downloading. Brave VPN’s straightforward app makes it a one-minute job, and it’s so satisfying.

Server Locations: NordVPN Offers Way More

At this price, you’d expect more servers from Brave VPN, but it offers only 300 in 40+ regions and 20+ countries. NordVPN has over 9,400 servers in 210+ locations, so it’s not even a fair comparison. It’s like comparing a Yugo to a Ferrari. They may be painted similarly, but even the paint quality differs. NordVPN uses physical and virtual servers for a greater location span, even if these locations may seem unusual.

For instance, NordVPN offers Indian servers. Brave VPN lacks them. The same goes for many African and South American locations that Brave lacks. NordVPN’s servers have 10 Gbps ports. Brave VPN claims the same, but realistically offers 500 Mbps speeds. NordVPN has dedicated servers for:

• Obfuscation

Brave VPN has none. Even if NordVPN had a smaller network, identical to Brave VPN, it would still defeat it. Its network quality is impeccable, particularly because of dedicated IP addresses that only a few VPNs offer in 2026.

NordVPN Bypasses Censorship, Brave Doesn’t

We tested Brave VPN in China (our testers, actually, this month), and reported it won’t budge. Since it offers no settings to play around with, it’s incredibly difficult to get it to work. There, we explained that it works, but it’s not an end-all-be-all solution. Obfuscated servers leverage OpenVPN TCP and provide stellar, but not ideal, performance. It works 6 to 7 out of ten times, with satisfying speeds that sometimes take a nosedive and make the connection sluggish. When it works, you can enjoy gaming, watching content, and browsing social media without any interruptions.

When it doesn’t, you can switch to another server and hope for the best. Still, NordVPN’s performance in China is expectedly solid, especially since the latest Great Firewall update that ‘killed’ most other VPNs. Performance in other countries was stellar on both sides. Some of our team members in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey performed extensive tests and concluded that both VPNs worked regularly.
