VyprVPN vs NordVPN Compared: August 2026 Speed Tests

By Florian Gray

VyprVPN owns every server it operates. That’s rare; it’s expensive, and it explains a lot about this comparison: a network of 700 servers where NordVPN has 9,500, alongside a subscription that costs a fraction of what NordVPN charges to keep. NordVPN wins 6 rounds, VyprVPN wins 1, and 1 ends even.

VyprVPN takes price and holds NordVPN to a draw on censorship. NordVPN takes apps, features, privacy, speed, streaming, and server coverage. Nothing is close except the two rounds VyprVPN kept. Here are the details on all eight.

VyprVPN vs NordVPN: All You Need To Know

All you need to know is that NordVPN is a superior VPN to VyprVPN in pretty much all aspects.

Apps and Compatibility

Both providers cover Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, along with Firestick, Smart TVs, Chrome OS, and tvOS. Router support extends to AsusWRT and Synology NAS on either side, which helps if you’d rather protect the network than every device on it. Linux is where they part. NordVPN has a full graphical client, open-sourced in late 2025, while VyprVPN leaves you on the command line.

That alone keeps VyprVPN off our best Linux VPN list. VyprVPN’s interface is the cleaner of the two. Minimal, quick to load, and near-identical across desktop and mobile, so there’s nothing to relearn when you switch devices. NordVPN opens on a clickable world map with a searchable server list. Its desktop settings menu holds more, which makes it denser to learn. The mobile apps are excellent.

NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous connections against VyprVPN’s 5. Five covers a phone, a laptop, a tablet, and not much else once a second person is involved.

Winner: NordVPN ✅

VyprVPN’s app is arguably nicer to look at. A Linux GUI and twice the device allowance settle it in NordVPN’s favor, which confidently wins the round.

VyprVPN is Cheaper Than NordVPN: Cost Compared

This is the one round VyprVPN wins, and it wins it decisively. VyprVPN offers three terms. The 2-year plan costs $3/mo, billed $72; the 1-year plan is $4/mo, billed $48, and the monthly plan is $5 with a coupon applied against a $10 list price.  NordVPN’s 2-year Basic plan comes to $3.49/mo, billed $94.23 for a 27-month term that includes 3 free months. Complete at $4.49/mo adds Threat Protection, NordPass, and 1 TB of encrypted storage. Prime at $7.49/mo layers on Coveron identity protection.

2-Year Price 1-Year Price Monthly Price Renewal Price
NordVPN $94.23 for 27 months $65.88 $14.99 $139.08/year
VyprVPN $72 $48 $5 $72 biennially or $48 annually

The first term is close. 24 months of VyprVPN costs $72; the same stretch of NordVPN Basic works out to about $84. Renewal is where the distance opens. VyprVPN charges $72 every 2 years at the same rate you started on, which averages $36 a year. NordVPN returns to $139.08 a year. From year three onward, that’s a difference of $103 annually, every year. Neither has a free plan, and both refund within 30 days.

NordVPN offers a 7-day trial through Android sign-up, which Android users can use to test before paying. VyprVPN has no trial at all.

Winner: VyprVPN ✅

Cheaper up front and dramatically cheaper to keep. A flat renewal is the honest way to price a subscription, and almost nobody in this category does it.

NordVPN is More Secure Than VyprVPN

And here, I explain why.

Shared Features: Here’s What I Found

Both providers include 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, split tunneling, and IPv6 and DNS leak protection. Both run Forward Secrecy, assigning a fresh key per session and discarding it on disconnect, and both operate private DNS servers, branded VyprDNS on VyprVPN’s side, so queries never reach Cloudflare or Google. OpenVPN and WireGuard appear on both and that’s unsurprising.

NordVPN’s NordLynx is a WireGuard build with a double NAT layer that stops any user IP from being written to disk, and it offers a post-quantum encryption toggle. NordVPN’s kill switch has an advanced mode that blocks all traffic unless the tunnel is active, which is stricter than reacting after a drop. Plus, it’s applicable only to specific apps, so customization is strong.

Obfuscation Methods

Each provider disguises VPN traffic differently, and VyprVPN’s approach has a structural advantage. Obfuscation matters beyond censorship: it’s also what gets past the VPN detection on services like Max and Netflix. Chameleon scrambles OpenVPN packet metadata to defeat deep packet inspection, and it works on every VyprVPN server. That’s the key part: no server selection required.

NordVPN handles it with obfuscated servers over OpenVPN TCP, which defeats VPN blocks effectively but covers only part of the fleet. It adds NordWhisper, a protocol built for school and office filtering that tunnels through web traffic. NordWhisper doesn’t support P2P, so filtered networks and P2P can’t be handled together.

Threat Protection and MultiHop

VyprVPN offers a NAT Firewall that blocks unsolicited inbound traffic, included on every plan. That’s the extent of its threat tooling. Threat Protection blocks ads, trackers, malware, and malicious downloads in real time across every platform, with a lighter version on mobile. It requires Complete or above.

Multi-hop is missing from VyprVPN. NordVPN’s Double VPN chains two servers in different countries so neither holds both ends, and it’s included on every tier, working on iOS, Android, and macOS as well as desktop. Plenty of cheaper VPNs have this, including Surfshark and PIA, which makes the omission hard to justify. The same depth is why NordVPN ranks among the top iPhone VPNs.

Winner: NordVPN ✅

Post-quantum encryption, real-time malware blocking, and multi-hop against a firewall and one protocol. Chameleon is the better obfuscation, and it’s the only place VyprVPN leads. The rest is entirely on NordVPN’s side this time.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN Privacy: Why NordVPN Pulls Ahead

Neither logs your activity. What separates them is how recently anyone independent has checked. NordVPN keeps no IP addresses, DNS queries, timestamps, or browsing records. Panama imposes no retention duty, and servers hold everything in RAM, so a reboot leaves nothing behind. Deloitte has audited that claim six times, most recently in February 2026, following earlier work by PwC.

Nordvpn Privacy Policy Log
© NordVPN

VyprVPN’s no-log position was verified by Leviathan Security in 2018, which made it one of the first providers in the category to commission an audit. Credit where it’s due. The problem is the date: that audit is now eight years old, and the company has changed hands since. Its current privacy notice confirms that no sensitive personal information is processed and that nothing is collected from third parties.

Vyprvpn Log Policy
© VyprVPN

It doesn’t do what NordVPN’s does, which is enumerate the VPN-specific categories that never touch a server. Ownership and jurisdiction complicate things further. VyprVPN belongs to Certida LLC, headquartered in Texas, inside 5 Eyes. NordVPN answers to Panamanian law. One point favors VyprVPN: it owns every server it operates, whereas NordVPN rents most of its server fleet.

Owned hardware means no third-party datacenter staff with physical access, a structural advantage and part of why VyprVPN’s network stays small. NordVPN’s servers are RAM-only and forget everything on restart. VyprVPN writes to hard drives, so data persists between reboots, and the protection comes from owning the building instead of clearing the disk. Both remain credible no-log VPNs.

Winner: NordVPN ✅

Six audits in eight years against one audit nearly a decade ago, from a jurisdiction with no retention law. VyprVPN’s owned infrastructure is the stronger idea; NordVPN’s verification is the stronger evidence.

NordVPN is Faster Than VyprVPN in Speed Tests

We tested from Belgrade across 3 consecutive days, 3 times a day, on UK, US, and Japanese servers. Both VPNs were set to WireGuard, so the protocol wasn’t a variable. NordVPN came in as the quickest VPN we’ve measured.

  • Native DL Speed: 342.59 Mbps
  • Native UL Speed: 19.65 Mbps
  • Latency Without VPN: 10 ms
Download Speed Loss Upload Speed Loss
VyprVPN 33% 37%
NordVPN 18% 7%

London was nearly a tie, with VyprVPN 5% behind on download and level on upload. The other two locations tell a different story. NordVPN was 33% quicker to the US and 33% quicker to Japan. Upload is where VyprVPN’s small network shows most. Its Japanese server returned 2.16 Mbps against NordVPN’s 17.85 Mbps, the difference between a usable video call and an unusable one.

UK (Download/Upload) US (Download/Upload) Japan (Download/Upload)
VyprVPN 308.33/18.47 Mbps 219.26/16.50 Mbps 167.86/2.16 Mbps
NordVPN 324.25/18.68 Mbps 292.75/18.31 Mbps 223.54/17.85 Mbps

Winner: NordVPN ✅

Even on the short hop, far ahead on the long ones, and the Tokyo upload figure is the single widest margin during my speed tests.

NordVPN is Better Than VyprVPN for P2P and Streaming

VyprVPN opened the UK and US Netflix libraries reliably. Japan and Canada required protocol switching and repeated attempts, and it manages 3 to 4 catalogs in total. NordVPN keeps no dedicated streaming category because every server handles it, and 20+ Netflix catalogs opened for us alongside Sky Sports in the US.

The usual spread of geo-restricted sports channels also worked well. Its Smart DNS extends that to older Fire TV models and consoles that can’t take a VPN app. Both VPNs allow P2P without restriction, and VyprVPN held its transfer rates even on distant servers.NordVPN permits P2P on every server, so there’s no server to hunt for. Its higher speeds shorten downloads on top of that.

Nordvpn Torrenting

Winner: NordVPN ✅

Five times the Netflix catalogs, Smart DNS for devices that can’t run an app, and quicker transfers. VyprVPN’s torrenting is solid; its streaming reach isn’t.

Server Locations: NordVPN vs VyprVPN

VyprVPN operates 700+ servers across 70+ locations, each company-owned. That ownership is the reason the number is small, and it buys something real: no rented hardware, no data center staff with physical access, complete control over its configuration. NordVPN offers 9,500+ servers in 149 countries, roughly 13 times the hardware across more than twice the coverage.

Its fleet includes virtual locations, which is how it reaches places like Guam, Nepal, and Uzbekistan where hosting a machine isn’t practical. Variety is one-sided. NordVPN splits its network into Onion Over VPN, Double VPN, and obfuscated servers, with dedicated IPs sold separately.

VyprVPN offers no specialty servers at all. Storage differs too. NordVPN’s fleet holds everything in RAM, so a reboot wipes it. VyprVPN writes to hard drives, which is the trade-off that comes with owning the hardware instead of renting it.

Winner: NordVPN ✅

13 times the servers, more than double the countries, and 4 specialty categories against none. VyprVPN’s ownership model is admirable, and it can’t offset that spread.

Both VPNs Bypass Censorship in China

Both got us online from China, and they reach that result by different routes. Chameleon works on every VyprVPN server, so there’s no correct server to find and no setting to discover. That design suits someone who needs a connection to work without a fuss. NordVPN’s obfuscated servers over OpenVPN TCP connect from the mainland, with NordWhisper for softer filtering on campus and office networks.

The catch is that obfuscation covers only a subset of the fleet; you have to select it deliberately. Elsewhere, the two are even. Both work well in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, Turkey, and Russia. Expect a speed cost from either VPN’s obfuscation.

Winner: Draw 🤝

NordVPN has a second method to fall back on. VyprVPN needs no configuration to get the first one working. Different strengths, same outcome.

Verdict: Pick NordVPN over VyprVPN in 2026

Six rounds to one, with one draw. VyprVPN’s pricing is excellent. $72 for two years, renewing at the same figure instead of tripling, is close to unheard of. Its owned-server model is a stronger privacy argument than most rented networks can make, and Chameleon obfuscation needs no setup to get you online in China.

But… Nothing about NordVPN’s wins is marginal. 13 times the servers, 5 times the Netflix catalogs, twice the devices, 33% faster to the US and Japan, and an audit from February 2026 against one from 2018. Take VyprVPN if the renewal price is the number that decides it. Take NordVPN for everything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

⚔️ Is VyprVPN better than NordVPN?

No, but it's cheaper. VyprVPN costs $72 for 2 years and renews at that same rate. NordVPN returns to $139.08 annually. On measured speed, streaming reach, feature depth, network size, and audit recency, NordVPN takes every round.

🌐 Does VyprVPN own its servers?

Yes, all of them. Most providers rent capacity from datacenter partners, so staff at those facilities have physical access to the hardware. Owning the fleet removes that exposure entirely. The trade is scale: VyprVPN operates around 700 servers; rented networks reach into the thousands.

🖥️ How many devices can each VPN cover?

NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous connections, and VyprVPN allows 5. Five suits an individual or a couple with a phone, laptop, and tablet. Anything beyond that, including a router configured with the VPN, needs a larger allowance.

⛩️ Do both VPNs work in China?

Yes. VyprVPN applies its Chameleon protocol across every server, so no special selection is required. NordVPN uses obfuscated servers running OpenVPN TCP, which connect reliably but must be chosen from the server list.

🎥 Which VPN is better for streaming?

NordVPN, by a wide margin. It opened more than 20 Netflix catalogs in testing, compared with 3 or 4 for VyprVPN, and its Smart DNS covers devices that can't run a VPN app, including older Fire TV models and gaming consoles.
