NordVPN Review 2026: Speed, Privacy, and Security Tested

NordVPN is usually the first VPN people hear about. It sponsors a lot of YouTube channels and podcasts, and it’s often the name a friend mentions when you ask which VPN to buy. With that much advertising behind it, it’s fair to wonder whether it’s the best VPN or just the best known.

I tested it on what the ads promise, from speed and streaming to privacy and security tools. One feature surprised me, and I found one Windows flaw, though only because I keep several VPNs installed for testing. The full NordVPN review follows, test by test.

NordVPN Speed Test Results

In my October tests, I used a 190.36 Mbps connection on a Windows 11 PC in Europe, wired over Ethernet, and tested each server with Speedtest. I checked every location at three times of day across three days on NordLynx. That’s NordVPN’s default protocol, the method the app uses to connect, and it’s built on WireGuard.

The US server kept 181.50 Mbps, a 4.7% speed loss and the best American result I’ve recorded from any VPN. Japan cost the most speed, at 15.7%, though 160.47 Mbps is still enough for 4K streaming on several TVs at once. The UK ping, the round-trip delay to the server, was the weak result.

At 60 ms, it was higher than I expected for a server this close to my test PC, and several rival VPNs had a lower ping on their British servers. Streaming and browsing aren’t affected, though competitive gamers may notice it.

NordLynx, Double VPN, and NordWhisper Compared

I tested each protocol on the same British server in one session, with the app fully closed before I timed each connection.

Double VPN was the surprise. Sending traffic through two servers in different countries cost just 2.9% of the download speed and 4 ms of ping, so you can leave it on every day. Upload dropped further, to 15.93 Mbps. NordWhisper, the protocol built for networks that filter VPNs, works the other way around.

Its 42 ms idle ping was the lowest of the four protocols, but with the connection busy, ping increased to 180 ms on download and 808 ms on upload.

In practice, a video call or game on NordWhisper will lag when another device on the network starts a big download or upload, so use it only on a network that blocks NordLynx. OpenVPN was the other surprise. Across the same three server locations, it averaged 172.31 Mbps down and 18.06 Mbps up, a 9.5% download speed loss.

That’s only 1.9% slower than NordLynx, a much smaller difference than OpenVPN usually shows next to WireGuard-based protocols, and its 54 ms UK ping beat NordLynx’s 60 ms.

The three plans share the same VPN and connection quality, and the higher plans add security tools. I tested on the Prime plan. The two-year terms include three extra months, so the first term covers 27 months.

• The Basic plan: $3.49 a month, $94.23 for 27 months, then $139.08 a year. Covers 10 devices and includes the VPN only, with no ad blocking or malware protection.
• The Complete plan: $4.49 a month, $121.23 for 27 months, then $219.48 a year. Adds next-gen antivirus with its ad and tracker blocker, bank transaction monitoring, NordPass, and 1 TB of NordLocker storage.
• The Prime plan: $7.49 a month, $202.23 for 27 months, then $296.28 a year. Adds Coveron identity protection, with monitoring, alerts, and insurance coverage, for US subscribers.

Shorter terms and add-ons cost more:

• Annual terms: $5.49, $6.49, and $9.49 a month for the Basic, Complete, and Prime plans, renewing at the same yearly prices as the two-year terms.
• Month-to-month billing: $14.99, $19.99, and $29.99.
• Dedicated IP address: an extra $4.19 a month on a two-year term.

Moving from the Basic plan to the Complete plan costs a dollar more a month and adds next-gen antivirus. The first-term price changes through the year with NordVPN coupons, but the renewal prices stay the same. Refunds, the Free Trial and Payment

All three plans come with the same 30-day money-back guarantee. I requested a refund through live chat for this review, and the agent asked for a reason from a dropdown list and processed it with no attempt to keep me subscribed. There’s no free plan, but Android users can start a NordVPN free trial of 3 days through the Play Store.

The trial requires a card, so cancel before it ends to avoid a charge. iPhone users can’t claim it, so the money-back guarantee is the only way to try NordVPN on iOS. Payment methods include cards, Google Pay, PayPal, and cryptocurrency through CoinGate.

NordVPN Security Review: The Features Tested

NordVPN offers more security features than most VPNs, and I tested the main ones.

Internet and App Kill Switches

A kill switch blocks your internet connection if the VPN drops, and most VPNs offer only one, covering the whole device. NordVPN adds an app-level version, where you name specific apps, and only those lose their connection when the VPN fails. A torrent client can be cut off while the browser keeps working. I tested the Internet Kill Switch, the system-wide one, on Windows 11.

I kept a continuous ping test active, then pulled the Ethernet cable mid-session and later ended the app’s process in Task Manager, and no traffic leaked either time. A PC restart didn’t expose the connection either, and traffic stayed blocked until the VPN reconnected. There’s no separate strict mode to turn on. Next-Gen Antivirus Scored 76% in My Test

Threat Protection Pro, renamed next-gen antivirus in May 2026, is three tools under one switch, and it keeps working with the VPN disconnected.

• Anti-malware: scans downloaded files and quarantines threats, plus a vulnerability scanner for installed apps. It isn’t a replacement for dedicated malware removal software.
• Advanced browsing protection: malicious site blocking, scam alerts, hijacked session warnings, search result safety flags, email link scanning, and a crypto wallet address checker.
• Ad and tracker blocker: ad blocking, tracker blocking, a cookie banner hider, and a URL cleaner that removes tracking parameters from links.

It blocked 103 of 135 domains, or 76%, on d3ward’s blocklist test. Other VPN blockers I tested the same way scored as follows:

A domain test checks only the ad and tracker blocker, so 76% reflects a fraction of the feature. Even so, the 32 domains it didn’t block are enough to notice on an ad-heavy news site, which disappointed me in software called next-gen antivirus. For fewer ads, pair it with an ad blocker in your browser.

Specialty Servers

• Double VPN: traffic passes through two encrypted servers in different countries, with very little speed loss in my tests.
• Obfuscated servers: OpenVPN TCP disguised as ordinary HTTPS traffic, for networks that block VPN connections.
• Onion Over VPN: traffic enters the Tor network after the VPN, on servers in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. It’s slow, as Tor always is, and onion sites still require Tor Browser: they didn’t load in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge on these servers. The guide to accessing the dark web covers the setup.
• Dedicated IP: an add-on IP address assigned to one subscriber, which cuts down on CAPTCHAs and bank login blocks.

NordVPN removed its dedicated P2P servers, and every server now accepts P2P traffic, so torrent users lose nothing.

Meshnet Is Still Available

Meshnet links up to 60 devices over encrypted tunnels for file transfers, remote access, and LAN gaming. NordVPN announced its removal for December 1, 2025, then reversed the decision in late September 2025 after subscribers objected, and committed to keeping it and making it open source.

The product director put usage at 1% of subscribers, and that low usage explains the shutdown plan.

NordLynx and Post-Quantum Encryption

NordLynx is built on WireGuard, with a double-NAT layer on top. That layer removes the fixed IP address WireGuard normally assigns each user in the tunnel, while keeping WireGuard’s speed. Encryption is AES-256-GCM, with ML-KEM post-quantum protection on every platform NordLynx supports, designed to resist future quantum computers. NordWhisper is the newer option for filtered networks.

NordVPN Review: IP and DNS Leak Test Results

I tested all three servers on ipleak.net and browserleaks.com, deleting the browser cache between tests. Neither site found an IP address leak, a DNS leak, or WebRTC exposure. A DNS leak would show your internet provider the sites you look up, and WebRTC, a browser feature for calls, can expose your IP address. NordVPN replaced my IP address on every server, and my own appeared nowhere, including in the IPv6 test.

NordVPN operates its own DNS resolvers instead of sending queries to a third party, and the same no-log policy covers them. A packet capture confirmed it: my queries went to NordVPN’s own IP address range.

NordVPN Privacy Review: Does It Keep Logs?

No. NordVPN is headquartered in Panama, which has no mandatory data retention law and belongs to none of the intelligence-sharing alliances. I read the privacy policy in full. Like every VPN, NordVPN keeps some data to make the service work, and the policy lists what it stores and what it doesn’t:

The left column matches the no-log standard a privacy VPN should meet, and nothing in the right column ties a subscriber to what they do online. Next-gen antivirus has its own section in the policy, because scanning URLs and files processes more data than the VPN connection does.

Six Independent Audits

NordVPN has completed six no-log audits since 2018. PwC did the first two, in 2018 and 2020, and Deloitte has done the last four, in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The most recent covered November 10 to December 12, 2025, and Deloitte issued its report on the last day, under the ISAE 3000 (Revised) standard.

The inspection covered the standard servers plus the Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, and obfuscated ones. Auditors also interviewed staff and reviewed configuration files, and account holders can read the report in the Nord Account panel.

Like any ISAE 3000 audit, the report describes how the systems were set up during the inspection window and says nothing about the days outside it. Six audits across eight years cover that weakness well, and few VPN companies have a record like it.

NordVPN Review: Streaming and Torrenting

NordVPN unblocked my full list of 14 streaming services. BBC iPlayer played at 1080p on the London server, and NordVPN unblocked JioHotstar on its Mumbai server.

Pluto TV and Prime Video detected the connection on a few attempts, and switching to another server in the same country fixed it.

For torrenting, the speeds are high enough that the VPN won’t slow your downloads. Port forwarding is missing, though. It lets other users connect to you directly, which helps when you share files back.

Seeding ratios on private trackers depend on an open port, so if that’s how you torrent, Private Internet Access, which I tested recently, is the better fit. Other torrent users can point their client at NordVPN’s SOCKS5 proxy, which changes the client’s IP address without encrypting its traffic.

Server Network and Coverage

The app lists 152 countries, the widest country coverage in the category, with servers listed by city in the larger markets. The whole network is RAM-only, so every reboot wipes a server’s data. Some locations are virtual, meaning the IP address belongs to the advertised country while the server is hosted in another one, and NordVPN labels those in the server list.

Coverage includes the UAE, India, and several African countries. Smart DNS, which changes your streaming location without encrypting traffic, covers older game consoles and Samsung and LG smart TVs that don’t support VPN apps. With no encryption, keep it for streaming and use the VPN app on your phone and laptop.

Does NordVPN Work in Censored Countries?

I haven’t tested NordVPN in China. On censored networks, connect through the obfuscated servers or NordWhisper, and install the app before you arrive, because NordVPN’s website is blocked in China. On networks that filter VPNs without banning them, including a hotel connection that blocked NordLynx, obfuscation restored access to every site.

NordVPN App Review: Ease of Use

The apps look modern, but the side panel is busy, with icons for features the cheaper plans don’t include. The desktop app starts on a map view, and typing a country into search is the faster way to connect. Connections took 2 seconds on NordLynx, 3 on OpenVPN, and 4 on NordWhisper. The mobile app has most of the desktop features, next-gen antivirus among them.

File scanning is missing on iOS, because Apple’s sandbox blocks it, so iPhone users have web protection only. The browser extensions are proxies that protect browser traffic only, with WebRTC leak protection, and the Chrome extension guide covers them. One fault came up again and again during testing. On some days, the Windows app connected in 2 seconds.

On others, it wouldn’t connect, because of a conflict with ExpressVPN, which I had open in the background on the same PC. Closing ExpressVPN didn’t fix it. I had to reset NordVPN’s app, wait a minute or two for the reset to finish, and sign in again, and it annoyed me when that happened a few times a day.

Not every VPN caused it: with PIA open in the background, NordVPN worked normally. I only ran into it because I keep several VPNs installed for my reviews. Most people use one VPN, so they’re unlikely to notice it, though if you keep a second one, expect the occasional reset.

NordVPN Customer Support Review

Live chat opens with a bot, and a human agent took over on every attempt. Agents answered product questions properly instead of reading from a script, and the documentation is good enough that I point people to it, including the iPhone setup guide.

NordVPN’s next-gen antivirus also feeds the Dark Web Monitor, which checks a registered email address against breach databases and names the source of each hit. Final Thoughts

NordVPN lives up to its reputation. Speed was never a problem on any server I tried, Double VPN barely slowed it down, and the audit record behind its no-log claim is the deepest I’ve checked. Its weakest feature is the ad blocker, which missed a quarter of the test domains, and the Windows conflict I found affects only users who keep a second VPN installed. The renewal price is well above the first-term rate, so buy the two-year plan and note when that first term ends.
