What is DNS?
DNS, the Domain Name System, is the internet’s address book. Type bbc.com and DNS translates it into the IP address your device connects to. Without it, you’d be memorising numbers. Your ISP assigns your DNS resolver by default, which means it sees every domain you look up and can refuse to resolve the ones it doesn’t want you reaching. Switching to a third-party resolver such as Cloudflare, Quad9, or Google changes who answers those queries.

DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) encrypt the lookup itself, so your ISP can’t read which domains you’re requesting. Firefox and Chrome support DoH, Windows 11 has it built in, and Android calls its version Private DNS.
The limit matters. Encrypted DNS hides the question, not the answer or anything after it. Your ISP still sees the IP address you connect to next, still sees how much data moves, and your real location is still attached to every request. It’s a meaningful privacy improvement, and it is not a substitute for a tunnel.
What is Smart DNS?
Smart DNS is a different technology that happens to share a name. Rather than simply resolving domains, it routes the parts of a connection that reveal your location through a proxy in another country, while your normal traffic takes its usual path. The result is a streaming service that believes you’re elsewhere, without your IP changing for everything else you do.

Changing your DNS is worth doing regardless. It’s free, it takes minutes, and encrypted DNS keeps your lookups off your ISP’s records. It won’t unblock Netflix, and Smart DNS will, on exactly the devices that need it most. Neither hides anything you do.
