Picking between NordVPN and TorGuard is a choice between two philosophies. Both encrypt traffic with AES-256, cover every platform, and put no cap on data. The similarities mostly end there. NordVPN is sleek and beginner-friendly. TorGuard is raw, technical, and built for people who like toggles. We retested both in 2026 across 8 categories, and the gap between them has widened since our last pass. All 8 rounds are below. The total score decides the winner.

TorGuard vs NordVPN: All You Need To Know

NordVPN beats TorGuard in 2026, and it isn’t close. It’s faster, independently audited, cheaper long-term, and it unblocks streaming platforms without paid add-ons, as we detail in our full NordVPN review. TorGuard counters with deeply customizable apps and up to 30 simultaneous connections on its priciest plan.

Two developments hurt it this year: TorGuard now blocks torrenting on all US servers after settling a copyright lawsuit, and it still hasn’t published an independent audit. Here’s the quick overview before the tests:

Applications and Ease of Use: NordVPN Wins

NordVPN’s polish shows the moment you open the app. The desktop client is built around a world map: click a country, and you’re connected.

A server list with a search bar sits beside the map for precise picks. The mobile apps mirror the desktop layout closely, which is why we ranked it at #1 on our list of the best free VPN apps for iPhones. TorGuard’s apps are old-school. Think of an aging Honda Civic with a manual gearbox: no driving assists, full control.

Every protocol, cipher, and script is exposed, and tinkerers will feel at home. We enjoy that freedom, but NordVPN is objectively more pleasant to use day-to-day. Both cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and routers, including Fire TV Stick VPN apps for streaming on the big screen. Their connection allowances differ:

  • NordVPN allows 10 connections in all plans
  • TorGuard allows 8 to 30 connections based on the plan

The first round goes to NordVPN. It gives you more connections in the base plan and a far smoother experience.

NordVPN is Cheaper than TorGuard: Price Comparison

Comparing these two on price takes patience. TorGuard alone sells three tiers across six billing cycles.

Min. 3-Year Price Min. 2-Year Price Min. 1-Year Price Min. 1-Month Price
NordVPN N/A $94.23 (with 3 free months) $65.88 $14.99/mo
TorGuard $153.99 $119.99 $65.99 $10.99

TorGuard

The three tiers differ only in device count:

  • Anonymous VPN with 8 simultaneous connections
  • Anonymous VPN Pro with 12 simultaneous connections
  • Anonymous VPN Premium with 30 simultaneous connections

Each can be billed monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually, biennially, or triennially. VPN prices normally drop as the term stretches, and TorGuard’s do too. They just never drop far enough. Even the 3-year base plan works out to $4.3/mo. The Pro tier climbs to $7.6/mo on the same term, and Premium sits near $8.7/mo on a 2-year cycle (the 3-year option is oddly missing there).

Decoding all of this takes longer than installing the VPN. And note: TorGuard’s refund window is 7 days, against NordVPN’s 30.

NordVPN

NordVPN keeps it simple. Four tiers, three term lengths, done. The 2-year plans are the best value. They come with 3 free months and discounts above 70%, starting at $3.49/mo for Basic. Higher tiers add NordPass, NordLocker, and Coveron, and even the priciest one undercuts TorGuard’s Premium while bundling far more. The 1-year plans also include 3 free months.

Monthly billing exists but costs $14.99 and up, which is why we favor affordable long-term VPN plans. Our NordVPN coupon page tracks whichever discount is live at any given moment.

Which VPN Is Less Expensive?

NordVPN, comfortably. Its cheapest plan beats TorGuard’s cheapest, and the same holds at the top end. TorGuard’s price also balloons if you buy tiers for extra connections. If device count is your priority, PIA covers 10 devices for $2.19/mo, and Surfshark offers unlimited connections at $2.49/mo. Both undercut TorGuard’s value for money by a wide margin.

Security Analysis: NordVPN is Safer to Use

Both providers are heavily equipped against snoopers, trackers, and geo-restrictions. Here’s what overlaps and what doesn’t.

Similar Features

  • 256-bit AES encryption. The industry standard, uncracked to date, active on every connection with either provider.
  • Automatic kill switch. Blocks internet access if the VPN drops. NordVPN’s advanced mode can block all traffic until you connect to a VPN.
  • WireGuard protocol. Both offer it for speed and stability. NordVPN’s NordLynx variant adds a double NAT system, so the server never logs your IP address.
  • Ad-blocking. Both VPNs can block ads efficiently. TorGuard uses an Ad-Blocking DNS, while NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro also covers mobile devices.

They also share RAM-only servers, private DNS, IPv6/DNS leak protection, and Forward Secrecy, pretty much the basics nowadays.

Unique Features: Where Things Change a Lot

Each side brings exclusives to this NordVPN vs TorGuard duel:

  • Double VPN – NordVPN
  • Threat Protection Pro – NordVPN
  • Meshnet – NordVPN
  • Obfuscated Servers – NordVPN
  • NordWhisper – NordVPN
  • Post-Quantum Encryption – NordVPN
  • OpenConnect – TorGuard
  • Stealth Proxy – TorGuard
  • Custom Scripts + SOCKS5 – TorGuard
  • V2Ray – TorGuard

NordVPN’s Double VPN encrypts traffic twice by chaining two servers. Threat Protection Pro blocks ads, trackers, and malware in one toggle. Meshnet links up to 60 devices for remote access and IP routing. Obfuscated servers disguise your VPN traffic well enough to circumvent the stubborn Great Firewall of China. Two newer additions widen the gap.

NordWhisper wraps VPN traffic in a web tunnel that reads as ordinary browsing, built for filtered hotel, airport, and office networks where standard protocols get flagged. And a post-quantum encryption toggle hardens NordLynx connections against future quantum decryption. Flip it once in the settings, and it stays on.

TorGuard’s OpenConnect is an amplified take on OpenVPN with AES-256-GCM encryption and built-in obfuscation. It performed close to advertised in our tests. Stealth Proxy slips under firewalls, SOCKS5 accelerates torrent clients, and custom scripts let experienced users program the VPN’s behavior.

The newest addition is V2Ray, with servers parked behind CDN networks for an extra layer of invisibility in censored regions. TorGuard still lacks split tunneling and Multi-hop, standard in NordVPN. Despite TorGuard’s customization, NordVPN packs more security value for less money.

They Don’t Store Logs, But I Prefer NordVPN’s Privacy

Jurisdiction comes first. NordVPN sits in Panama, TorGuard in Florida, USA. A US base isn’t disqualifying (PIA proves that), but it does raise the bar for proof. TorGuard’s written no-log policy is clear:

Torguard No Log Policy
© TorGuard

No IP addresses, no DNS requests, no browsing history. The company has kept a clean record too, with none of the scandals that hit providers like IPVanish, which we also tested. The problem is verification. NordVPN’s no-log policy passed a Deloitte audit in February 2026, its sixth consecutive confirmation since 2018. TorGuard has never published an audit or a transparency report.

After many years, that absence is a choice; it leaves customers taking the company’s word for it, and that’s never good. NordVPN wins the privacy round on audited proof and a friendlier jurisdiction.

NordVPN is Faster than TorGuard: My Speed Tests

The “Tor” in TorGuard stands for torrenting, a bandwidth-hungry activity, so we walked in expecting speed. Below is our baseline connection in Southeastern Europe, where we were at the time of testing.

Native Speed Test
© Speedtest

From that starting point, we tested each provider 3 times a day for 3 days on servers in the UK, the USA, and Japan, with protocols left on their defaults to keep things fair. Average speed losses across all 9 tests per VPN:

Download Speed Loss Upload Speed Loss
NordVPN 18% 7%
TorGuard 32% 65%

And the averages per location:

UK (Download/Upload) US (Download/Upload) Japan (Download/Upload)
NordVPN 324.25/18.68 Mbps 292.75/18.31 Mbps 223.54/17.85 Mbps
TorGuard 287.77/3.73 Mbps 215.83/3.53 Mbps 191.85/12.97 Mbps

Downloads were competitive on the British VPN server, our closest location, then NordVPN pulled away with distance. TorGuard’s uploads collapsed on UK and US servers, dipping under 4 Mbps. NordVPN wins the speed round, decisively on uploads and long-distance connections.

Streaming and Torrenting: NordVPN Takes Both

This round exposed the sharpest difference between the two providers.

Streaming: Why NordVPN Works so Much Better

TorGuard treats streaming as a paid extra. Reliable unblocking requires a streaming IP address at $7.99/mo (Singapore costs $13.99/mo), on top of your subscription. The IPs span the USA, Japan, Australia, Hungary, Poland, and more, and they do work. Want to watch out-of-market NFL games? You’ll need a US streaming IP first.

Without one, TorGuard unblocked BBC iPlayer and a handful of channels in our tests, but Netflix access was hit-and-miss.

NordVPN works for streaming out of the box. It unblocked over 20 Netflix libraries in our testing, plus Max, Disney+, Paramount+, Hulu, and ITV. Smart DNS extends coverage to devices that can’t install VPN apps.

Torrenting: NordVPN Takes It Again

Here’s the twist nobody saw coming from a VPN named after torrenting. TorGuard blocks BitTorrent traffic on all its US servers, a condition of the legal settlement it reached with a group of film studios. P2P still works on servers elsewhere, but US users must connect abroad first, eating speed in the process.  Our best VPN for torrenting guide explains why that trade-off matters.

Outside that restriction, TorGuard remains a solid VPN for uTorrent and other clients, with SOCKS5 and port forwarding to stabilize downloads. NordVPN has no such limits. It has no dedicated P2P servers, and now the whole network works, so you just pick the server and go with it.

NordVPN wins both halves: cheaper streaming with wider coverage, and unrestricted P2P where TorGuard now has a legal handbrake.

Server Locations: NordVPN Offers More Servers

We keep repeating that network quality beats raw server counts. NordVPN offers both, and does so effortlessly:

  • NordVPN has 9,500+ servers in 149 countries
  • TorGuard has 3,000+ servers in 50+ countries

That’s roughly triple the servers and coverage of nearly three times as many countries. Both fleets are RAM-only on 10 Gbps hardware, though TorGuard’s is far smaller. NordVPN’s specialty lineup adds:

  • Double VPN
  • Obfuscation
  • Onion Over VPN
  • Dedicated IPs

Onion Over VPN, for instance, lets you go on the dark web in privacy without a separate Tor setup. A NordVPN dedicated IP costs $3.99/mo across 18 countries. TorGuard’s dedicated IPs come in regular, streaming, and residential flavors at $7.99/mo. Twice NordVPN’s price, and the residential ones can’t torrent.

NordVPN takes the server round on size, variety, and add-on pricing.

Do They Work in China? Yes, But Here’s the Catch

If you live in or travel to China, Russia, Iran, or the UAE, obfuscation decides whether your VPN connects at all. Both providers have it. TorGuard’s Stealth VPN cracked the Great Firewall in our few-week test window with only occasional failures, and the new V2Ray servers give it another disguise.

OpenConnect proved less reliable. NordVPN’s obfuscated servers connected consistently and held higher speeds throughout. Note that NordLynx alone won’t cut it in China; you need the obfuscated mode. For lighter blocks, think hotel or campus Wi-Fi that filters VPNs; NordWhisper is the simpler fix, though it trades some speed for its disguise.

Elsewhere, both are dependable for bypassing the Instagram ban in Turkey or connecting from Russia and the Gulf states. Performance-wise, this was nearly a draw. NordVPN edges it on speed under obfuscation, so it takes the final round.

Conclusion: NordVPN is Still Better than TorGuard

NordVPN sweeps it, 8 rounds to 0. The margin comes from price and proof. TorGuard stays expensive on 3-year terms, charges extra for streaming, has no audit to back its no-log policy, and now blocks US torrenting. NordVPN does everything much better at $3.49/mo with 3 free months and a 30-day refund window.

TorGuard still fits one reader: the tinkerer who wants custom scripts, a Stealth Proxy, and 30 connections, and who torrents outside the US. Everyone else should grab NordVPN first. If it disappoints within 30 days, you get your money back and lose nothing. TorGuard’s 7-day window doesn’t extend the same courtesy. The pattern held in our TorGuard vs ExpressVPN duel, too.

FAQ on TorGuard vs NordVPN

📝 Can I test TorGuard and NordVPN before committing?

Yes. NordVPN's 30-day money-back guarantee and TorGuard's 7-day one are separate, so you can subscribe to both, test them, and refund the one you drop. Start with TorGuard's shorter window if you plan to compare within a week.

✅ Has TorGuard ever been audited?

No. TorGuard has not published an independent audit or transparency report to date. NordVPN's no-log policy passed its sixth consecutive Deloitte audit in February 2026, so it's more trustworthy.

🧲 Can I torrent with TorGuard in the USA?

Not on US servers, where BitTorrent traffic is blocked following a copyright lawsuit settlement. You can torrent through nearby servers in Canada or Mexico at reduced speeds. NordVPN's US servers carry no such restriction.
